Where's the oil filter?

This is my first message here.

I am the founder of the Swedish LROC, Svensk Land Rover Klubb, SLRK, Svensk Land Rover Klubb - SLRK - klubben för Land Rover och Range Rover bilägare founded back in 1987.

Have a 88" 1974 with the 2 1/4 petrol engine and all possible bodies.
Normally I drive a RRC 1982 with a 2,5 VM TD engine, that I love.

My day-to-day car is a VW Lupo 3L - it uses 0,3 litre diesel per 10 km!:)

Have travelled 1/3 of Australia in a 109 in 1988/89 and love your country. GREAT!! :):D

Got to know many of you including Anthony Meader, who has visited me a number if times. HI!

A neighbour of mine has a TD5 that makes a hell of a noise when accelerating. We have isolated the problem to either the oil centrifuge or the turbo.
I have no manual or parts catalogue, but presume that the oil centrifuge should be able to dismantle and bypass. If then the noise is still there we know the problem.

Anyone who could come up with a link how to dismantle and bypass the centrifuge or some pictures/drawings?

look in front of the turbo charger, you'll see a domed cap held down by 2 small bolts.

thats the centrifuge housing.

for diagnostics purposes only...

remove the cap
remove the filter from in there
replace the cap.

that is the only way to bypass the centrifuge. Dont run the engine for long without it.

I haven't had anything to do with the TD5, but I have a similar, aftermarket (Mann-Hummel) centrifuge for the 4BD1-T in my rangie.

I assume like mine, the TD5 centrifuge filter has nozzles on the oil outlets (which cause it to spin). The nozzles restrict the quantity of oil that is bypassed from normal lubrication duty.

Removing the filter will allow a lot more oil to bypass, but my unit has a pressure relief valve that only allows oil to flow to the centrifuge when the pressure is sufficient for the relief valve to open.
