    200TDI rear crankshaft seal

I have to fix a oil leak that appears to be coming from the rear CS seal. My manual doesn't tell me a lot but I am assuming I remove the gearbox and bell housing and change the seal without having to remove the sump.
    Is this correct.
    Its a 93 Disco.
    Thanks

I think the theory is to get to the CS seal, clutch etc on a disco the theory is its easier to pull the engine than remove the gbox?????

Not certain on the 200 but on the 300 (same bottom end I believe) there is a CS seal "forming" tool which comes with a new seal to protect it as it is placed... all goes well till it fails again!!!!

Maybe clutch time too while the jigger is out?

I'd suggest finding a workshop manual for the 200tdi before starting. The setup for the sump and rear main oil seal is remarkedly different to the 300tdi.
Most of the RAVE sold here deal with the post 94/300 tdi Disco's - there is an ad for a set of defender 200tdi manuals here:

Land Rover Owners Club of Australia (Sydney Branch) - Members Market

but I can't tell how long the ad has been running or if they are sold or not.

I have a Haynes Service and Repair Manual that covers this.

    What manual are you using?

Can copy and post if you like, too much to quote.

I have a Haynes manual. Don't know if it is the same as yours. Mine is biased towards the 300TDI. The 200 is not covered all that well in a lot of cases. Thanks for the offer but I have ordered a more specific manual from Pitstop

Not sure with the Disco, with the Defender it was way easier to remove the engine with all of the front section.
If you are going to do this may as well do all the seals while the donks out.

I saw a 200 Tdi in a workshop last week that went in for a leaking rear main. What had actually happened was that oil was escaping along the threads on the flywheel bolts and getting into the bellhousing that way.
The fix was to drop the flywheel and seal the threads and reinstall, fixing the problem completely.
