Sick Patrol

been quoted $1400-$1600 to rebuild the pump, plus 6 hours labour to remove and refit, plus at 257,000km she's due for an injector overhaul, even the previous owner (who'd had it since a year old and had never had them done) suggested replacing the injectors when he traded it in......

*sighs* i know its blasphemy on a LR forum, but for a pootrol, she's a bloody nice ute, and a steal for the money i was gonna be paying...... not now though

White smoke is a sign of incomplete combustion. Dodgy fuel and crook injectors can do it, as can a dodgy injector pump.
Injectors are approx. $98/injector to rebuild, and if you do keep the vehicle, get whoever rebuilds them to double the break open pressure, although I think most diesel place do that on the TD42 these days anyway.
That price you were quoted for the pump o/haul is about the going rate.

We've had similar symptoms (not quite as bad, though, just the white smoke and rough idling) on our Patrol a number of years back and it was a load of dodgy fuel. A dose of a good fuel cleaner fixed it.

Maybe try a good fuel cleaner like Redline RL2 first before writing the beast off ?

at the moment im kinda in a bind, i need to get it running mickey mouse and make a decision wether im gonna take it or not by lunchtime tomorrow, and considering that in its current state its undriveable, im not really getting my hopes up
