i know im not gonna get a lot of sympathy here, but the patrol forum is still having registration issues, so here goes
1994 Nissan Patrol, 4.2L non turbo diesel
fired up and ran fine for 5 minutes this morning, moved it around the yard a couple of times to jump start a couple of vehicles that had flat batteries, then all of a sudden it started idling VERY rough, revs had dropped down to 3-400RPM, and it was threatening to stall
went to start it, cranked over fine but wouldnt start till i held the accelerator down partway, and now when i stand on the accelerator, it pours out black smoke, and simply refuses to rev, gradually easing the accelerator down still makes tonnes of smoke, but revs do increase, idle quality is still non existent
anyone have any idea what may be wrong?

If it was mine, I'd get a nice 11a LR...
but seriously.
Have you checked:
1) Fuel pickup - not gummed up with muck in the tank?
2) when was the filter last changed? Change it if not recently!
3) Does a patrol have a glass window on the bottom of the fuel filter? If so, is there just nice clean diesel in it or worse?
4) Maybe check fuel lines
5) nothing loose along the fuel line? Not sucking air anywhere?
hope this gets it going again

Is something blocking your air intake ?? Check your air filter element and all hoses/snorkel ( if you have one) are clear.

its only literally suddenly started doing it this morning, not gradually, so air filter is out
talked to the local diesel workshop, they reckon a shagged injector pump
*sigh* least i'm still waiting from the $$ from work so i can buy it...... which im now not going to!

I have read some posts over from ExplorOz in the past about a little gauze filter somewhere near the fuelpump (or in the fuel line connection to the fuel pump) and these can become blocked apparantly.
Disclaimer - I have no idea about Patrols and I'm not a mechanic. I just got the impression from the posts on ExplorOz that this little gauze/filter/whatever it is is often overlooked when people chase down a fuel delivery problem on their Patrols.
Maybe do a search on www.ExplorOz.com and I'm sure you'd get some results about it - ExplorOz is running slow at the moment so I can't do the search and include a link to the results.

Actually not sure if a NA GQ has one, but the GU's do.
It's below the fuel banjo on top of the pump, but it'll cut the fuel supply when blocked and slow and stall the engine, not overfuel it and blow copious quantities of smoke. You need to make a small hook with some welding wire and fish out the locating spring, then the thimble filter below it.
The old GQ ute we had on the farm had a paper pre-cleaner in the air intake at the near side front guard. If that becomes blocked you will get those symptoms, and a lot of people don't realise it's there as it just looks like a cyclone pre-cleaner. It caught me out once with those symptoms.
The other thing it can be is the pump adjustment bolt has come loose and the pump timing has gone totally out of whack.
Also change the fuel filter and re-bleed the system with the primer on top of the fuel pump, although it doesn't sound like any fuel supply issue.
Or the pump is shagged....

still doing it, making lots of white smoke now, cant smell any petrol in the fuel at the filter in the engine bay
pumping the priming pump at the filter seems to alleviate the problem at idle, tho anything more than that is a bit of an ask
totally gutless, flat to the boards in first she only manages a walking pace......
thank god i havent paid for the damn thing yet! lol

White smoke is a symptom of over-fuelling and the unburnt fuel being ejected throught the exhaust pipe.
Suspect the pump timing or something similar,
Cheers Charlie
I'd say the injector pump or the injectors.
As soon as you say "injector pump" your looking at big $$$$$$$$
So i think you could buy several rangies with the cash it would cost ya for a new injector pump
CHEERS TIM.
