    Koni Raids

Anyone spent the moola on Raids and have any feedback they would like to share?

    Koni: RAID

Do Billstien/other have anything that directly compete with something like the Raid?

    Cheers

    Hey Aaron

I havent bought them as they dont make them to fit a D2, but my dad has them on his Patrol and he swears they are the ducks nuts!

He does a lot of long outback touring on rough roads as well as towing an ultimate camper and he says even after 500km on corrugated road they hardly develop any heat in them and he says the rebound and ride is really well controlled (as good as it can be in a Patrol).

They are an absolutely huge bore shock and combined with the quality of Koni's manufacturing I would say they are really good. I dont know what you are running but I think they only make them for the Rangie?

    Cheers

    Angus

I've seen them on a GQ and they are massive.

I am not sure they would fit through the coil hat at the front with enough clearance.

Rears you could make work no worries.

    Have a go

Have them on the Defender... they don't understand what fade is. Very happy with them.

They are a straight bolt in Dave (not that I have them)

There are two lengths, too, although the stroke isn't as long as I'd want.

Problem with big bore shocks on rover fronts, when they articulate they can foul on the spring tower

I know there isn't a lot of clearance there, but the Raids are only standard stroke.
They were designed for the Dakar as a bolt on damper for the stock classes.

I fixed any potential problems with the TLC Koni's, I turned the stone guard off.

I didn't realise they made a rover specific item (I've never seen the rover ones)
Just made a little assumption () that if they where the same as GQ they would be interesting.

    Cheers.

    Thanks for all your replies.

What would one expect to notice in difference in ride handling of the standard. Would it be say.... The big improvement of decreasing tyre pressure on hard rocky ground. Less/more?

Springs - I have the choice of Lovells or Dobbinsons at the same price, or Kings for 20 dollars extra. Im going to take a guess that they're all pretty much the same?

DaveS3 They list the Defender as an option on their site. aswell as G-wagon

Rick - Massive articulation is what I want though standard stroke is what I need. Im always getting sidetracked by my wants rather than my needs. Its a tourer afterall.

Insaying that, I plan to get it air born to test their inbuilt bump-stop style feature:P

I was talking to Graeme Coope rthe other day when I bought some Bilsteins from him.
I asked him about the ride of Koni Raids and he said it was "horrific". This is on a RRC , but I know that ride is perhaps not such a priority on a one tonne payload Defender. Now Graeme sells Billies and says he cannot get a good enough margin from the Koni importer but I trust his integrity to tell it as he sees it. Someone like him gets to drive lots and lots of variations.
As a general rule "Raid" type shocks are probably stiff in jounce to help cushion landing , if they are tuned for Raid type events. So they would probably give a terrible ride.
BUt hey what do I know. I got the Billies valved for comfort and it seems nobody else wants this as Bilstein has stopped importing comfort shocks.
IMHO shocks are meant to damp spring rebound and not to improve turn ( stab bar)in on cornering,or in place of stiffer springs, but as I said my opinion is obviously the minority.
For off road work you need soft shocks or the ride is terrible, You need anti fade for corrugations. Its the short sharp bumps which heat them up.
Graeme also told me that in his experience with Discos, the sport Bilsteins tended to cause the car to skip on corrugations. He uses standard Rover bushes on them to improve ride harshness as the Bilstein bushes are "like rocks". I am doing the same.
    Regards Philip A
