    fuel gauge playing up

My fuel gauge has gone strange (300 Tdi Def). It's reading low (around half when it should be reading near full) but it's also fluctuating quite a bit. I'll check that it's earthing OK, but if it was the earth would it not be reading high rather than low. I'm thinking it's probably the sender. Any ideas?

Sorry, can't help with your problem, but i'm having troubles with mine as well,

The spring tension on my guage seems to have gone, goes from full to empty in 400km's!!

No I don't think it's an earthing problem. How do I take the sender out of the tank?

If its a 110/130 with a rear tank - see attached

If it works the same as my Disco1 V8 gauge then:
High resistance = low gauge reading
Low resistance = High gauge reading

Shorting the gauge's sensor wire to earth results in a reading high and off the scale.

I assume it is the same as the gauge in the Disco1 300Tdi is the same as the V8 AFAIK. So if the Defender has the same fuel sender as the Disco1 300Tdi then you're in business.

Given all that it might be a dodgy join somewhere in the loom producing a high resistance variable join.
Maybe even a dodgy float on the arm in the tank.

I'm guessing it is a connection somewhere, possibly including the earth on the gauge (check this by seeing if the reading changes when you switch the dashlights on/off (remembering that the gauge takes 30 seconds or so to respond).

I've gone through a few of these over the years. Mine develop the same problem & it turns out to be a poor contact on the variable resistor at the sender unit.
When the sliding contact leaves the resistor, the guage drops to zero. Go around a corner & the contact moves & the guage comes back to life.
