    ATF in D2 Manual

    Hi people.
I realise ATF is used in some Disco1 MANUAL gearboxes, anybody used it in a D2.Arent the gearboxes very similar, the D2 being quieter and a bit stronger???
My trd gear baukes most of the time.
Went to every oil seller in Narrogin this morning.Couldnt get any Syntrans,MTF94 or Penrite ManualGearbox 75(BETTER THAN MTF94 according to Penrites website) Syntrax was the closest, but its a heavier weight.
I have some PENRITE FULLY SYNTHETIC ATF,not the lower grade Penrite Synth ATF.Can I use this(the engine oil is draining as I type) in the service Im doing or just wait????
    From Penrites website.

    PENRITE ATF SYNTHETIC
    Density @ 15degC 0.855
    Viscosity,kinematic cSt @40degC = 35 @100degC=7.9
    Viscosity index is 209
    Brookfeild viscosity @-20degC=900 @-40degC=9300.

PENRITE MAN TRANS 75(semi synth, better than MTF94,so they say)
    SAE 75W80
    Density @15degC 0.862
    Viscosity,kinematic cSt @40degC =59 @100degC=10.3
    Viscosity index is 164
lost the brookfeild measures,(got wet and smunged) HEAPS bigger numbers.

    Thoughts please.
Is it OK to use the ATF or wait till I can get the reccomended stuff.

    Thanks
    Andrew

yes, the R380's are similar, but the D2 box has improved bearings and shafts.

A syn ATF will shift better when cold than any MTF, but with that VI (VI=209) it obviously has a healthy dose of VII's (viscosity index improver's) and no matter how shear stable they may be these days, it will shear (get thinner) with use.
A dedicated syn GL4 spec MTF should also protect the gears and bearings better than any ATF, even those that are very high quality (Redline, Amsoil, Neo, Castrol Transmax Z and I'm assuming Penrite synthetic ATF), but my understanding is that Penrite 75 isn't as robust as their ATF.

Penrite also make a synthetic MTF, 'SIN Manual Trans' which looks good on paper, and could be equal to or better than Syntrans in use.

You can't get MTF94 anymore,it was discontinued last year.I am changing from ATF to Redline MTL as my gearbox is baulky when hot and it is the local fix for LC 5 speeds, some of which wear out before the original tyres do. Pat

    Thanks Rick
So given that I have plenty of the Synthetic ATF(10 litres)that I was given would you use it in the D2???,or keep it for the Rangie (ZF Auto)

Unless I get a NO NO NO dont do it before I drop the oil tommorow,I think I will try the ATF.
I dont think it will do damage in the short term, not doing HEAPS of heavy towing at the moment like I have in the past.
Has syntrans in at the moment,2nd isnt too good cold 3rd most of the time.
If Im to undertake a big trip will revert to the reccomended oil.
I do have the external trans cooler fitted so all should be good I hope.

I had excellent success with "Mobil Agri Fluid 424", albeit in an LT77. It has a kv between MTF94 [which I found too baulky/noisy] and ATF [which I found lacked wear protection]. The packaging claims it has proven successful usage in 4wd transmissions, and it worked very well for me, combining the smooth shifting of ATF and EP protection of a gear oil. It cost $84 for twenty litres.

Try it, what have you got to lose ?

I used to get a snick going 2-3 with Syntrans sometimes, even when hot as if I'd beaten the synchro, but it was inconsistent as mostly it was a good change.

I've been using something reasonably exotic and a bit heavier than recommended for the last six months, (it went in specifically for summer) but it's been getting a bit baulky in the sub zero starts lately unless I rev match exactly.

If it was my vehicle, I would wait until I got the correct oil. Why make extra work for yourself by having to change it before your next trip?

It won't hurt to leave it in for a week or so until you can get supplies of the correct oil.

    Cheers,

    Lionel

I am not surprised that they don't make MTF94 anymore. I bought a 20l drum for around $120 last year from the caltex depot I was told this was specially made for Land Rover transmissions. Surely there is a direct replacement. I too would wait for an opinion from a LR dealer or Oil company. Cheers, Erich.
