    300tdi engine D1

Ok so how do i take the fan off to get the bloody shroud off. Have just found a couple of water leaks in the system and need to make some space . And how do i clean the intercooler as it has more oil in it than the bloody sump . all this and i still haven't fixed the *%&^@#$ slow starter motor . So very close to busting out the hammer and adjusting a few things in the shed .

There is a tool that holds the fan still while you undo it from the hub.

If you look down between the fan and the pulley you will see 4 10mm blot heads and a 1 1/16 (I think) nut on the back of the fan.

BE AWARE, it is left hand thread and normally BLOODY tight.

I think the tool is the same for a Falcon, I just made mine from a bit of HT flat steel.

For the tool you just measure between the centres of the bolts on opposing sides and then mark out a square, then drill 3 12mm holes on 3 of the corners and with an 1 1/2 hole saw and lots of coolant, cut out the inner part between the holes.

Then with a hacksaw, the bottom section out and then weld it to a long peice of flat (or make it at the end of a long piece of plate.

Mines out of 2mm HT bright plate that isnt all that readilly available but I had some left from another job but mild steel in 2mm should be fine if you know that it's Left Hand Thread.

When you put it back on, dont use locktite on it or else you will be cutting it off next time you need it off.

By the way, you cant get the shroud off without removing the fan without cutting it in half.

    what he said...

i got my spanner off ebay, delivered for $20 odd dollars.. it is a 32mm thermo spanner. i also got the spanner that fits over the hub nuts and holds the hub while you undo the left hand thread, makes it way way easier... it cost about $20 as well.

saves a mountain of money in a swear jar... not to mention yur knuckles and patience..

If you get a 32mm fan open ender, just give it a belt with hammer
(as the boys above said, remember it's a LH thread ) and it will just spin off.

Hell, half the time I can just belt it with my hand and it spins off. It won't come undone in operation as it has that LH thread that keeps it tight.

<edit> I always keep the threads on the hub lubed with anti-seize too. Helps big time.</edit>

    +1

If you're really stuck, a centre punch on the side of the nut to get it started will do the trick but chances are that you'll end up trashing it.

thanks for that guys . ended up leaving the fan on as i didn't want to wreck anything not having the right tools . So worked around it ( not fun ) and have sorted most problems . Just need to get some gasket goo and seal off behind the water pump on the block . Cleaned and dried the inter cooler and have also cleaned up all the leads and earths . so fingers crossed the starter will wind over quicker once back together .
