Salisbury leaking on thread - a problem?

I've had a bit of search but i can't find the info i'm after so i'll ask.

The salisbury in my 120 has an oil leak where the axle housing screws in to the diff housing. Now it has a maxidrive difflock fitted and the leak is on the side where the actuator is. The oil leak doesn't concern me but i was reading on here that people have found that the thread can be loose. Is this a sign of that problem? Is there a way you can check it insitu? I guess that if the thread it is loose there will be movement which can't be good.

And finally if it is loose how do you fix it?

    Assistance appreciated.

There axle tubes aren't threaded into the centre if that's what you mean. They are a press-fit, which is then plug welded (you can see the 4 circular welds).

I have heard of the tubes cracking in rare cases when 110s have seen hard use with heavy loads. Would ge a good idea to degrease and check for cracks.

I will be doing that this afternoon!

When the previous owner fitted the maxidrive the was a strip of metal welded along the bottom of the axle housing tube, may it has done something.

    Cheers.

Thats reasuring, the leak is very slow so the oil isn't a problem.

Think i will have a bit of a sticky anyway.

The main problem is, if oil can get out, water can get in

    Oil leaks

I use to drive a truck (12 ton tilt tray) with a 20 ton winch fitted to it and the all the oil would leak out of the winch over a period of about two days. I filled it with a product called Morey's, I think it was a 90 grade oil 50/50 mix it never leaked again. Another truck in the fleet with a 290 Cummings motor, had more noises in the motor than I care to mention and no one want to drive it in case it blew up on them I use to do alot of maintance on the vehicles and I filled the sump with a morey's mix and with in a short period every one had forgotten as the noises had gone and it stopped a couple of leaks also. When I left that company the vehicle was still earning it's keep .

Unfortuneately you were right. I cleaned it up and there is a crack at the end of the welded on piece. The crack is about 1.5" long. Seems like the the 'strengthing piece' may have done more harm than good.
So now the question is how do I fix it?

Drill both ends of the crack, then get a competent welder to preheat everything and weld it up.

    What is this "strengthening piece"?

When the difflock was fitted (I assume) a piece of about 20 x 10mm bar was welded along the bottom of the axle tube. I guess the idea was to strengthen it but it has in fact weakened it. The bar ends about 4 mm from the diff casting creating a stress point. You can see the end of it in the previous picture.
