    Tdi fuel filter Q

What filter do you use, and does it have a gasket on the centre thread ?

Reason for asking is that for years I've used Donaldson's P550388 filter, and it's always been a German made filter and appears to be a Mann WK842/2, (which I think is the OE filter, too) but the last one I picked up is now made by Donaldson (definitely one of theirs, as it sports Donaldson's traditional reversed base plate) in Mexico (they have a huge plant there) and it doesn't have a gasket around the centre tube, unlike all the previous versions.

Of course, me being me, I'm paranoid that without a centre gasket the damn thing is somehow going to by-pass.

So, what do you fit, and does it have a centre gasket ?

    Hi Rick,
Not sure about the bypass problem, the filter isn't under a great deal of pressure, and the only time I reckon it would bypass is when it gets VERY blocked. I have never used any filters other than Mann, Bosch, Coopers, Crosland or the ones with 'LR' on them. They all have centre seals, and they must be there for a reason.

I would be safe and fit one with the seal on it.

    thanks JC.

    Here's a Mann.

and an 'old' Donaldson (made by Mann-Hummel to my eye)

    and a new Donaldson

I'm trying to find out the nominal filtration values for these filters. I'm hoping 5 micron (beta2=5) or under.

If the thread is a reasonably tight fit, you couldn't get much flow past it. The DP of flowing through any slight gap in the thread would be much higher than the DP of flowing through the filter.

But if that is your only fuel filter...

Pat, I've never bothered with the CAV adapter for either vehicle as these spin ons are nearly as cheap as the CAV cartridges.
Last one cost me $16.36. The Z332 equivalent for the Patrol cost $13.64. <edit> Oops, add GST to those numbers
