    Fuel filter / water separator

    Hi guys/ gals,
Prob a dumb question but I havnt had any exper. with these before
Fuel filter / water seperator on the defender under the back drivers side guard, how do you bleed or know if there is water in your fuel?
and is there any better systems then this as on another tread water got to the motor and stuffed things up.

    cheers for your help

Provided that it's a Tdi - these things work really well.

    LR to CAV options

If it's a TD5 or Puma, then the principle is the same, but you have to take into account pressure from the electric pump - which isn't too much more than a lift pump but something to think about.

do you have the CAV type filter or the one as fitted to the TD5...?

If its the CAV type theres 2 types of those, one with a glass bowl and one with a metal one. The glass one you can see the water sitting under the diesel thats in it. to drain you just undo the drain wing nut or drain nut thats on the bottom outside edge of the filter, let the water out and put the drain bung back in.

If you have the metal based CAV seperator OR you have the TD5 type that doesnt have a water sensor in it (or you dont trust the water sensor) you take the bung out of the bottom and drain about 100mls into a clean can or clean glass/bottle. you'll then be able to see the water sitting under the diesel.

The primary difference in the cavs and the td5s seperator is the location of the drain bung, the CAVs is off center (the center bolt holds it all together) and the TD5's is in the center.

There are other breeds and types of fuel water seperators out there but you check them in much the same way as you do the CAV units.

There is one final test you can do which is with your sampled diesel in a can heat the can to about 100 deg C and if it Spits at you like when you flick water onto a hot greased frypan then youve got water contamination. I dont reccomend this unless you have no other way of checking.

thats the same as the Td5 filter... well sort of in the TD5 that bottom bung has the water sensor in it to tell you when you have too much water in it.

    anyhow

that big bung looking thing at the bottom, undo that till diesel starts to flow out, catch about 100mls and tighten the bung up, from then on its just a case of looking for water in the fuel youve captured. From all my books (dont got the new transit defender one yet) you do that at every service.

    Best of luck.
