dont keep your eye on the transfer case you either have to be a contorionist to do it or strapped under the vehicle which while achievable due to the ground clearance does get interesting when it comes time to fording.

Keep an ear out for it you'll pick up the thrumming/whining of a Tcase low on oil once you know what to listen for.

If you dont know what to listen for and have just filled it up, pay attention that "theres something wrong It doesnt sound right" feeling is a clue. work out what it is thats missing and when it comes back stop and fill up the oil.
You are right about checking the transfer on the TD5 Defenders. You need a slight offset extension (or whatever you call them) on the ratchet to clear the handbrake drum. Another clever bit of engineering by Land Rover. As for the Gearbox with the large TORX ......... I suppose these don't strip like an earlier version of alloy plugs. Cheers. Erich
