I have one in the side and I have tested it with a Minihelic pressure /vacuum gauge.
There is only about 11 inches of water pressure drop at full throttle in first/second going up a very steep hill, in the whole system between the entry to the MAF and the snorkel.
At cruise I have about a poofteenth positive pressure.
11 inches of water is nothing/nada/mayow/nix.
The only negative I have found is that in heavy rain the filter medium gets damp/wet. I think the same would happen with 180 curve into the front only you may have more pressure drop.
6 one way 1/2 dozen the other.
This assumes the LRA adaptor is used.

For a start there is no 180 bend to get in the front (see pic), and second by coming in the side you are only exposing a 4" dia. area of filter to the incoming air and dust and the filter will block solid in that area quick smart. The round air filter is designed to recieve air on the front of the filter, thereby exposing the Whole of the filter to air and dust. I reached that "conclusion" by using commonsense, Regards Frank.
