    R380

Having trouble changing, mainly 3rd, sometimes 4th, just the actual selection of the gear(no crunching). Also slight juddering in reverse when on incline.
Im guessing syncro`s & possible clutch 4 the reverse????????
Any other possabilities? This is a bit out of my league.
    Cheers Dean.

Give the gearbox an oil change and see what happens. In this weather (winter) avoid heavier stuff, and first try ATF. If the new ATF doesn't help, it will at least clean out the gearbox when you change it for something like syntrans. Avoid going with anything heavier than syntrans or MTF, as the 380 does not like anything over 75w.

    original clutch ?
If so, the shudder is possibly an indication the pressure plate is on the way out as the diaphragm pressure is uneven.

With the R380, try a different ATF or use a dedicated MTF, which is my preference. The first few gear changes when cold will be worse, but it will be better when hot, particularly when the weather gets hotter.

My gear changes are a little harder now that Melbourne has got some really cold mornings. Once the box has warmed up a bit then its fine.

I am using the Syntrans MTF and so far is the best compromise for my aging gearbox. It has a hard time with 2nd and 3rd mainly.

If you change to a different type of oil give it a chance to work its way through. We are talking a few weeks not just days!

My geabox is the same.Last week we had a very cold night here and the auto in the disco wouldn't change gear next morning and my defender wouldn't select 3rd without a push.Let it sit idling for a few minutes and that seems to help abit.I was thinking of covering the tranny cooler on the disco too, there's no need for it in winter. Thanx 4 the replies, I think I`ll try the syntrans & c what happens.
I stuck with the ATF because thats what the manual said & its been fine 4 260000k but perhaps its time 2 move on. Thanx again.

I used Mobil Agri Fluid 424 in my manual. Its cheap at $80/20L and wasn't as baulky as an MTF
