    the gear lever is held in the 3rd/4th location by 2 external springs and a plate, known as bias plate & bias springs. The plate either needs adjusting or it is cracked and needs replacing. This set up is difficult to explain but is simple to fix.
    To access this the centre console has to be removed

    Caltex/Texaco MTF94 75w-80 has been the factory fill since Defender WA131138, so I'm guessing '96 or '97 some time.
