    Swivel seal retaining plate

    Hi,

On my '94 Defender there are 2 metal plates per side holding the the swivel ball seal in place. (Bolts onto the swivel housing)

It seems my Landy is one of the few which have a metal retaining plate and a metal gasket to do this job. Most other landies have only the retaining plate and a paper gasket.

Apparently it all depends on the vehicle's axle number.

The metal gasket and the metal plate looks exactly the same. Can anyone tell me whether they are in fact the same, this will have teh same part number.

Further, do I still stick a paper gasket in there?

    Thx

AFAIK no Land Rover has a paper gasket near the large seal in the swivel housing.
There are two widths of seal.
There is a paper gasket near there which fits between the swivel housing and the axle itself where the 6 or 7 bolts are. Maybe you are confusing the two positions.

PS, I do not know about defenders directly, but there seems little point in having 2 plates/gaskets etc to hold the seal.
I think it should have 1 plate ( and no paper gaskets) and someone has got over enthusiastic.

Thx Phillip, the guy at teh spares shop said there is a paper gasket on other models. I know which one you are referring to is the paper gasket between the Swivel Ball and the Diff housing.

I'm talking about the opposite side of the Swivel Ball.

What do you mean with "two width of seals"?

I have one big rubber seal on each side that fits over the Swivel Ball but no other rubber seals there.

Look its possible that there is a paper gasket, but I have never seen one or heard of it. Most Land Rover axles/components are shared between the different models so what applies to one usually applies to all.
This is the situation as I know it.
Every axle has a large wiper seal on the swivel. AFAIK I have never seen a paper gasket there nor is there any reason to have one. The steel retaining plate /gasket or whatever has about 9 or ten little bolts holding it, and it holds the seal. I have never seen 2 plates, but maybe there is , but I can see no reason for it.
The only difference that I know about between models is that there are two different swivel housings, one with a deeper channel for a wider seal, but these I think changed way back in about 1977 or so.

So the upshot of all this is that IMHO, you will do no harm whatsoever by having one plate and no gasket , but fit an extra plate and paper gasket if you want, but it will make absolutely no difference to the function of the seal.

From the 1996 Defenders manual, 2 plates, no gasket, except for swivel housing to axle tube, which you will destroy when changing the swivel seal. This will be why he wants to sell you a gasket
