Thumbs up Is this a rip off ?

    Hi Guys n Gals,

My 93 Discovery Tdi has a leak on the rear diff (pinion seal I think).

I have been quoted $120 to repair plus an additional $40 if it needs a magic sleeve or something that sounded like that. Google said you need that if the spline is scored? As you have probably guessed by now I'm not an expert.

Another Diff and Transmission specialist has advised me that he would do it for around the same price in situ. However he then told me if you don't completely remove the rear axle to replace this seal the bearings in the diff will ultimately fail in the near future and he would give no guarantee for the cheaper repair option. He quoted $650 to do the job "properly".

Anybody with a keen BS detector who can offer an opinion on this please.

I'm tempted to go the el cheapo route and buy a 2nd hand diff on fleabay if I end up needing it. It's the love of my life (sorry Trish) but at 15 years old I'm not spending a fortune on her.

The first option is fine, the pinion bearings are shimmed, not crush washer, so really isn't "that bad" to loosen and refit

Spend $650 to fix a pinion seal? Bollocks to that

If it IS only a pinion seal and there are no bearing noises from the pinion etc, then I would forget the speedy sleeve, fit a new flange and seal kit, and drive in/ drive out including changing the differential oil around $200. $120 is OK, but by previous experience with speedy sleeves, I now fit new flanges to them instead. Slightly more $$ but they don't leak again.
Do it once, do it right.
I agree, rebuilding the differential to repair a leak seems a little over the top.

$120 for a front pinion is average but if that includes all labour and sundries its ok.

$40 for the speedy sleeve is a little rich but I could deal with it if the install was done perfectly with all the requisite attention to detail a speedy sleeve will let you avoid

$650 to pull down the diff and redo it is reasonable and if he IS going to go that way (cant think why if the flange goes back on properly without overdoing the tension) then ID also be prepared to fork out for new internl diff gears and shafts as a precaution.

it'd want to be howling like a maniac on a full moon before It'd want the full bit.

No noise or problems, small oil leak. The "expert" quoted this price without even seeing or hearing it. Asked no questions just told me what should be done. He's not getting my business.

    Thanks for the advice.

Go and buy a seal, get a speedy sleave (just in case) do it yourself

    not very hard to do..

cost of seal under $20 bucks dont know about the speedy sleave but do know they work fine fitted plenty to scored flanges with no problem

should take a compleat novice no more than hour an half to do its bloody simple...

$120 bucks for a work shop to do is ok, if that includes the seal...speedy sleave extra....

gotta rember the going rate for a spanner basher is around the 110 PH now in a workshop

PS as for removeing the axle to fix a pinion.seal leak that is BS

the first guy sounds like hes on the money but to play devils advocate the specialist may be on the level with you because he hasnt checked it hes just quoted you the worst case scenario, I do it for some things ("dave how much to do some work on an auto?" will automatically see me quote you the price of 2 replacement transmissions, my current morgage, enough for a slab of beer and some nibblies on the the side just in case and then Id tell you how much it cost after the fact)

I would trust the guy who quotes you like this, given that you had come up to me and said "I have a leak from the front of my rear diff where the prop shaft goes in" I would have said

"if its only a seal thats $$"
"If I need to rework the sealing face (read speedy sleeve in this instance) then its $$+$"
"IF there is something wrong and I need to replace bits of the pinion that will be $$$$$"

just the seal is a case of a hand full of bolts and nuts and should take less than an hour once its on the hoist

reworking the sealing faces takes a bit more but It could be done with just an additional 15 minutes if you did it the lazy way an hour for a spot on job

Pulling the diff out, sorting it all out then putting it in I would guess at 4 hours worth of work for a rover diff IF nothing goes wrong and he has all the parts on hand. you dont need to drop the whole housing out but you do need to pull the half shafts and remove the carrier to get to it. Its even more involved for a front.

All fixed - no rip off

    Hi,

First of all thank you to everyone who contributed. I appreciate it.

A resolution for anyone who's interested. Took it to the diff specialists (who had quoted me $120) this morning. Picked it up repaired at 12:30.

Very happy with the result and the service guys. They told me the flange was scored and they removed the unit. put it on the lathe and removed 4 thou. According to them still had plenty left on to grip the new part.

They replaced the seal and the oil with Castrol for the grand total of $120 inc everything. I'm very pleased with that and so is swmbo with no new oil leaks (until the next time, this is a landy after all)

I thought it worthwhile to name them as we can all be quick to criticise however it's nice to share when mechanics do a good job, in this case it was Trans Gears and Diffs in Thomastown, Melbourne.

    Regards

    Thanks Martin

I was wondering if these guys were ok. I've gotta get my syncros done, but its under warranty so to get my $$ I have to use these guys rather than my mechanic. I'll see what they quote...
