    Auto gearchanges..

Hi all, looking for some advice on my auto box in a D1 V8.
Is it normal for it to do the 1-2 change very soon after taking off? I'm talking maybe 3 meters, and pretty much regardless of how hard you take off. The 'box changes fine otherwise.

if its ok, can i join in this thread? i have a d2 td5 auto. its gear changes are annoying. no matter the throttle position(up to about 50%), incline/decline, load on the car, engine temp, gearbox temp, it ONLY changes gear at preset speeds. this seems a little stupid, especially under light load and when the car is very cold. 1-2 is 25kph, 2-3 is 45kph, 3-4 is 55kph.

also it wont go into lockup in 4th sometimes. on my trip to the finders and back. it wouldnt lock up for the first 100kms of highway travel. it almost does on the flat and downhill bits, but any throttle and it unlocks a bit. was very annoying.

I would say if it changes up straight away even if you put your foot to the floor, something may be wrong. It should be able to hold a gear to a reasonable rev level, if you keep your foot down.

Do they learn driving styles at that age? I know modern auto's have a habit of adapting to the owner.

My 3.9 is a manual and the only autos I have experience from LR are a 2004 d2 td5 and a 1980's 3 speed RR 3.5, so sure someone with more knowledge than me will be along soon!

    Cheers
    Pete

Unless you have your foot flat, and into the kickdown detent, a 3.9 will immediately change to second.
This is wait for it!!!! Baboom -------to save petrol.
It is normal if a bit of a joke.

If you open the bonnet and look at the accelerator connection to the plentium housing you may see the kick down cable ... you wind it on or off to ajust how it responds to throttle position

Loose cable = changes sooner .. less revs
tighter cable = changes later ... more revs // holds gears longer

Try 2 / 3 turns either way to get the desired effect your after

Be wary that this alters line pressure inside the transmission and can screw your auto, if you don;t know what your doing, real quick like

Based on that ... Take it to a Rover tranny place and get them to mull it over
Better they play with it ...
