    TD5 oil light poltergeist

    Ok
BlackBettys oil idiot light has NEVER worked.
Replaced a broken leaking sender a couple of weeks ago.
    Still no idiot light.
Today pull into the drive light comes on,rec to 1000rpm,it goes out.
    Switch off check everything,all ok.
Turn key, idiot light works as it should pre-start,start it and same goes off after 1000rpm.Switch off thinking I have serious engine issues.Retry after 20mins,no light at all.Give it anoter 10 mins light with key but no light with engine running.
Only change was the fitting of a new battery and fittings to the leads.
    HELP

I would check that the wire has not fallen off and is occasionally resting on an earth such as the engine.

    Thanks,already have done so,its OK.
Started this morn,no oil light.Went for short drive temp only up to 58deg,oil light on below 1000rpm.Switch off, light is working with dash lights again, light on below 1000rpm.Leave 10 mins, oil light on with key no light below 1000rpm.
What is the chance that during the battery swap I wriggled a wire that was loose preventing the sender working and the oil pressure switch is faulty???
It wasnt genuine, its a Brtipart item.
OR I have an oilpressure problem, the bolt was loktited after I bought the vehicle.

Try borrowing an oil px sender off another TD5 that you know is working and try in your Disco. Will confirm yours either way.

Andrew, Don't discount the possibility that you may have an instrument pack issue, and/or a fuse box problem. These vehicles are struck by all sorts of stupid gremlins, I have had a D2 with slow to react RH indicator circuit; the fuse box under the column was to blame, I have another one with intermittent limp modes and starting issues; engine compartment fuse box was the problem...

I would be also checking that the wire from the sender unit hasn't rubbed through/ been damaged by the bracket at the back of the engine. It runs across the edge of the bellhousing and follows the other pipes and wires across the back of the head/ block. Intermittent operation could mean 'touching earth' and NO operation could mean 'moved slightly away from the earth' with this particular sensor.

You'll just have to trace it from the sensor to the wiring plug at the firewall to check continuity and eliminate/ or repair an engine bay wiring issue first.

    Good luck mate.

Just fitted a mechanical gauge to ensure I actually have oil pressure.
    COLD,idle=55psi,2300rpm=65psi
    HOT,idle=20psi,2300rpm=55psi.
Sounds like it is a gremlin.
What do these oil pressure readings for a TD5 with 235000ks sound like,ie good,ok,fair, poor????
    Thanks
    Andrew
