Defender 130 Tdi 300 Starting Problems

Hi all, I need your thoughts and some advice

My Defender 130 300 Tdi was leaking diesel from the injector pump so I had this serviced in Townsville along with new timing belt and assorted bearings by a well known specialist (great service).

Picked it up, it ran great, drove around Townsville for a couple of weeks without a problem, drove to Maryborough no problems. I left the Defender in Maryborough and drove my Disco back to Townsville and returned two weeks later.

The Defender would not start, had fuel, cut off solenoid appeard ok etc. A mate came over later in the same day the thing started first key turn. Next day no start in the morning again. Drained all fuel put fresh diesel in and turned it over, it started with a bit of a splutter then settled down, did run around no problems. Drove it around over the next couple weeks no dramas.

Drove to Kuranda again no problems, left it sit at home here for two weeks. Tried to start it last weekend would not kick, had to leave it to go back to Townsville. Returned home yesterday tried it and it started on the first key turn and ran fine all day.

Tried to start it again this morning and you guessed it no start again.

Have looked for air leaks cant find any, looked for fuel leaks cant find any, checked flow at injector connections fuel flow present. The fuel pump is not new but pumps up manually with good flow from the bleeder.

I have run out of idea's as to what may be causing this intermittant fault any input greatly appreciated, any one having had the same problem symtoms and solved it I would appreciate your input.

    Regards

I'm no expert but used to have a pootrol that did the same thing, just would not start after sitting around without a squirt of "start ya barsted". Problem was the glow plugs relay was stuffed. Replaced it and had no more problems.

yes, try listening to the cut-off solenoid - is it operating each time the ign is turned on/off?? - listen without operating the starter - have someone else do the ign switch thing while you listen in the engine room

    regards - L

Short in the ignition? Earth problem? Sad battery?

    Sound electrical rather than fuel.

    Cheers

Thanks for the replies so far,
Tried most of the suggestion already
Can't fault the solenoid power feed under test cannot induce loss of power by manipulating wiring.
Audibly solenoid operates correctly on test.
Batteries 2x 720amp fully charged and in good condition.
Engine earth appears ok but I will check further.
As far as I can tell glow plug is different circuit and they and their relay also test ok.

Did you have the injection pump rebuilt or just have the seals replaced?

    Cheers

Had a similar issue with mine. Turned out to be the blade crimp connector to the SOV. It had lost its tension so every now and then it would disconnect itself.
