AT tyre advice - Disco I

Let me put some truth to 2nd hand tyres.
Provided they are well kept, no punctures etc they are fine.
More so, most real farmers will keep a set of tyres in the shed for many years, let the rubber harden and never have a problem with punctures again.
They also never put great big fat tyres on with super aggressive tread patterns.
Take a good look what is on farm utes and the like of people who live in the area we sometimes venture.
Steel rimmed wheels shod with skinny tyres.
Some of my mates are deer hunters some retired and all put skinnies on their trucks.
Big wheels and tyres are for posers and most of us know that, there is the odd use for them but in general they are just for feeding our ego and sense of bigger is better.

Michelin XPC are wicked tyres, not perfect but what is.

I did have a set of Geolanders and also had good wear but terrible in any sort of mud.
This is a hard question as everyone has their own opinion and much is personnal preference.
Good luck and work out how much is for road use and be realistic.
It seldom exceeds 5-10%.

Farmers don't do 120 km/h on the highway. Actually, I've got a "brand new" 1995 XPC from my spare, that will go a rellie's farm. There's no way I'm putting it on my vehicle though, even though it looks new.

The tyre companies fought tooth and nail against reduced tyre expirations (who wants their stock expiring), but even they have had to accept a 6 year lifetime. This is not based on hypothetical or lab testing, it's based on a heap of cars crashing due to tyre delamination.

Its also why manufacturers are trying to develop better carcass technology, such as the new Maxxis Trepadore which is expensive, but has a stainless steel belting to prevent corrosion. I understand others are using barriers over the belts aswell.

Righto, this is a bit of a wsted post but Bigguy, who is the average farmer.

My Dad was a farmer who shod his vehicals with narrow (so to speak) 750 16s yet my uncle put 32X10.5 15s on his identical Landcruiser back in the 80's.

My oldman used Grandtrek's and Uncle Peter had BFG muds.

Does that mean they both were average farmers or was Uncle Peter a poser.

I once started a thread on narrow verses wide tyres, the question cam up, what is considered to be wide/narrow?

On the other front of storing tyres, if they are new then this does nothing as they need to have been heated and cooled several times to start the hardening or the rubber (which isnt actually rubber, it is basically plastic).

The main problem with old secondhand tyres is that you rarely know where they have come from and what damage they may have.

yes they are popular with farmers for their farm trucks but like stated previously, they rarely poke along at high speeds in their farm trucks, I know it took a lot of coaxing to get my oldman to go above 90kmh in the Landcruiser........and when doing 100kmh I found out why :p 750 16s dont balance up real well on splits :(

well I finally bit the bullet and chose some tyres.

Bridgestone Dueler 694 230/70R16 - originally I ruled them out on price, but it turns out that the 225/75R16 is $272 but the 230/70R16 is $234 - apparently the same size is used on Mazdas, Explorers & some others...economies of scale I guess. I've had good miles from the old Desert Duelers on my old Landcruisers, so when the D694 price fell into my budget I was happy to get them.

Thanks for all your replies & discussion, esp. the comments on Yokos which led me to talk again to the Bridgestone dealer & learn about the cheaper size. Will let you know of any good or bad experiences with them.

ps the TRS option didn't work for me, I am out North & a trip to Lonsdale is too hard to fit in around all the other stuff I have to do most weekends.

Note that the factory stock size is 235/70R16. Is that what you meant, or have you bought 230/70R16?

i dont belive there are 230/70 tyres on the market.
