Question AT tyre advice - Disco I

    Calling all tyre gurus:

I found a good thread on M/Ts but nothing much on A/Ts, so here goes...

I have steel 7" rims on my 300Tdi series 1 Disco. I am looking for some LT rated AT tyres. 70% of the time it lives on bitumen (going to work to pay for the bush trips). The car had some worn out Cooper Discoverers when I got it.

I want to get something pretty close to the original size, either 225/75R16 or 230/70R16. The owner's book also mentions "205R16" - does that mean 205/80R16 or was that a different rim?

    I am considering:
    Dunlop Adventurers 235/70R16 $225 ea
Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour 235/70R16 $250 ea

    I have ruled out:
BFG ATKOs - some threads said they are not as good as older BFGs & overpriced
Coopers - a mate had a really bad run with those
    Bridgestone 694 - $272=too many $, I need 4 of the things (& a timing belt!)

    I don't know anything about:
    Federal
Toyo (a retailer said these are great but he was selling them)

Thanks for any happy or horror stories you can tell, or speak up if your favourite brand is not on the list.

    Cheers
    Paul

I too have the pirelli's but if you do get them make sure you get quoted on the LT and not P, although they are rated the same I think the LT has the stronger sidewalls

Toyos are getting good write-ups in the US:

Comparing favourably in noise levels, comfort etc over most other brands. Only thing letting them down is tread wear appears to be a little worse than others.

Their M/T's are on my consideration list at the moment.

I use Pirelli scorpion at's 245/70 r16s. They perfom well in most conditions and are very good on the road. Tread does tend to get a bit clogged in mud but still drive ok. 30000 km so far and they seem to be wearing well. Tread patern is slightly different to ATR's so can't judge them.

I know there have been some reports about BFG A/T's but I had these on the disco for 18 months and couldn't complain. I got 255/70 R16, and they were probably the largest tyre to fit without doing major mods. Mind you they were mostly on the road towing, and no real hardcore offroad stuff.
