Regarding tyre sizes, when I got my 1993 Disco it had Michelin (XPC?) tyres. They were sized as 205R16. I think that this means that they are the "full-size" profile, which I think, approximates to an 82 profile and so your 80 profile guess is just about spot on. They were on 7" wide rims.

IIRC the difference in rolling diameter between 205R16 & 230/70R16 is less than 1% (ie: "stuff all").

    decided I think...

    Thanks for your replies everyone.

I tried to get the Scorpions but I was told they are unavailable. Bob Jane offered Yoko Geolandar G012 for $235, I will probably go for those.

I need to get it sorted next week because we are off to the Flinders for a few days & I need new treads in case I have to rescue my mate's Patrol

    Cheers
    Paul.

They won't last 40k.A very soft tyre that I wouldn't take on outback roads. Pat

But don't buy tyres older than 6 years. Especially XPCs...

BFG, General grabber AT's and Toyo's will all be cheaper than them and will last a lot longer.

My BFG AT's were $200 each and the bosses Toyo's were $174 each and are great on wet tar as I found out today.

The General Grabbers are about the same on and off road as BFG AT's but should be under the $200 mark.

I was quoted $260 for BFG ATKO yesterday. If I could find them nearer to $200 I'd be more interested.
Any idea who retails the General Grabber AT?

The Toyo is just over $200 & people seem to like them...

I wouldn't really buy 2nd hand tyres for a DD at all. Id worry about the condition of the carcass even if it was a spare. Apparently the tyre is still porus and eventually the steel belts in the carcass break down which can lead to delamination. I really dont need that on the highway or while "enjoying" Bells line of Rd.

No idea who retails GG's in SA.

Either tyres have gone through the roof in 12months that is likely with oil prices like they are or your tyre guy has seen you coming.
