Could really use some advice please, D1 - 92 blowing smoke...

    Hi folks,
Could really use some good advice. I have had my Disco series 1 1992 for about 2 1/2 mths. I have just done my second oil change after about 14K. Car's going great. Came out in the morning and found a little puddle under the engine just behind the left passenger wheel. (to lite to be oil, more like Power steering fluid and water). Levels are fine.....

Took her to the guy I bought her from and he came out and had a look. Puts her in neutral and takes her to about 2000 rev's.... Huge cloud of white smoke, I mean huge . I know she blows a bit when you start up and take off but I am getting a consistent 800k per 80Ltr's and she is running as well as she ever has. (fuel pump putting fuel in oil...?)

He is going to do the injectors for me at $40 a pop plus an hour or two. But I just don't know enough about diesels to know whats going on. Under revs she is fine once she warms up.

Am I in for real problems here....?

The puddle sounds like air con condensate. Not sure what else it could be in that position. Anyway, fluid colour red = PAS, green = coolant, black = oil. White smoke == fuel problems (or possible coolant from a blown head gasket, but not during reving). What's he actually going to do for $40 per injector?

    Hey Damien,

The leak seems more like power steering fluid, pretty sure it is just a hose. Said he was going to get his mecanic to check the injectors ans see if they need cleaning\replacing.

I asked said parts would be about $40 an injector and he would charge me a couple of hours labor. Looked after me so far, not concerned about getting ripped off. I just feel a bit frustrated not knowing why there is suddenly so much smoke when high revving in neutral.

I mean the cloud lasted as long an he was applying fuel. The cloud was he- uge. Is it fuel and oil mixing......?

At that price, can I buy a few hundred ???

Have you checked the valve clearances ??

white smoke from a diesel is usually low compression or incomplete combustion...

theres a fair few causes and there will be other symptoms to point to the reason...

    Hey guys,

Not too savvy on the diesels. More of a network engineer.....
So far I have replaced air + fuel filter and oil.

    It's 200 TDI.
Under strong engine use Pettigrew track for example I get Black smoke. Heaps of power no trouble. When she's cold or if I stop putting injector cleaner in every couple of tanks I get (white smoke). When I take off or I am accelerating, eye witness say white.....

I have just been reading up on the net and the hose from the turbo has black electrical tape (repair on it) air leak....?

Before I bought the car I got her checked out an the mechanic said the fuel pump didn't look to good.

But BK you say low compression...... whats the go with that...? Valve clearances are a bit out of my scope for the moment... my experience is more red holden 186..... TDI much better...!

The low compression side could be lots of things...

valves not closing, air inlet resitriced, rings not doing their job. are the usual suspects.

Overfueling or poor injection usually results in a black sooty unburnt diesel but it if you have top notch injectors that can start to go towards a haze and if its cold enough a grey.

If you want to see a good example of unburnt fuel and low compression go get someone whose got a series Diesel running to start it up without using the glow plugs and whe it finally fires to keep the revs as low as possable untill it starts to run properly....

While its trying to get warmed up to get everything going properly you'll get the white smoke effect (unless its a top notch diesel with top notch fuel) then as it warms up and gets sorted the smoke will change colour and stop.

Which injector cleaner are you using? Im not aware of one for a diesel injection system (there are ones that help clean the fuel sysem, dewater fuel and Winterise summer diesel) If your using a petrol injector cleaner in a diesel and that stops the white smoke then things are not as good as they should be in the engine, injectors or the fuel injection pump.

    Hey Dave,

Thanks starting to make more sense now. Smoke is white.

I put Nulon injector cleaner in the Fuel when I fill up. About every three tanks. I started doing this to see if it would help with the smoke and it did.

I tend to fill up at at the Miltilda's. I was thinking of draining the tank and checking for water if the injectors didn't do the trick.

Definatly gets batter after she warms up. From the sunshine coast to Bris most days and back again so she is getting a good run. Smelling at idle real smelly sounds like I might need to get her checked out.

You better hope theres nothing wrong with the injector pump it can get quite expensive.

If your using what I suspect your using what you're doing is lowering the flashpoint of the fuel (thats a by product of how petrol injector cleaners work) which makes it easier to get going in a diesel... But ulitimately its not good for diesel engine. you can achieve the same effect by blending a little metho and petrol into your fuel.
