I agree with everything you say Peter, as I said, it was the potential for issues that I was commenting on. If Glen knows more about the systems running these vehicles, he is then able to decide for himself.
Dave has elaborated even more on some other Td5 issues, but I was mostly trying to demonstate the yawing abyss between the electronic controlled and the non electronic controlled diesel engines.
As regards the carrying of sensors and ECU's etc as spares, and a Nanocom or RCL/ laptop etc; is this they way to go on holiday?? having to anticipate the worst?:(
Again, I love driving these vehicles, and I still may end up with a Td5 130CC to replace the RR when it gets too long in the tooth...:cool: - A few years further to go in the old girl I hope:o

I dont mind carrying spares, but then the one issue we had up north was stoving in a radiator! bloody typical!! ;) lol

Both engines have their advantages and disadvantages really.

The funny thing is there are probably tens of thousnads of TD5's that never ever have a problem!!

(mine wasnt one of them ;))

Good point about the radiator! these are common to all vehicles (except the old VW!)and they can stop any of them if they get a hole in them:mad::mad:

I guess the end result is that everyone likes his or her vehicles for their own reasons, (and I meant what I said about the 130CC...Today I drove a chipped low km straight and cared for one and I'm very tempted actually...:eek:) and as I mentioned in an earlier post, I too know people that have never had a reliablilty issue AT ALL.


The disadvantage of the Tdi is that once you have driven a Td5, chipped or not, it is hard to go back:twisted:

For info I have had

Failed Crank position sensor (failed as I was driving past the main dealer so I drove it straight in :) )

Throttle issues. turned out one of the dash screws had been screwed through the wiring loom - caused a dead throttle when it got wet and shorted out.

Injector loom.

Thats it. I love mine and would never go back.

Im about to go from a Chipped out TD5 to an NA 2.25 series Diesel..... :)

theres a few issues here.fuel economy for 4.2td is pretty bad,a mate of mine has one.dont know about reliability.....should be ok.

dealer networks are virtually non existent for landys in the bush,but you would have to be unlucky to need one.

if you do decide on a td5 you need to get one with a genuine service record.most of the failures are caused by vehicles not serviced correctly,or overheated.chipping can also cause problems....others will disagree.

due to the way the temp guage in the td5 is calibrated i would fit an engine saver.

i wouldnt go past the td5.

i have had 3 of them ,auto discos,and never had a breakdown.1st two did 90k each,3rd is now on 65k.the 1st one did have oil leaks from everywhere,axles,gbox,tbox,etc.only engine problem was rocker cover leak.

2nd was better,rocker cover & sump gasket leaks but no others.

3rd has had a rocker cover gasket& a double seal(is between the auto&transfer box) replaced

overall,no real engine problems.

fuel economy for td5 is excellent, & as said before no breakdowns

i would also suggest going to a lr specialist,not a dealer.

a pre inspection by a lr specialist would be a good idea before bying.

bugger the reliability issue! there isnt one, just get a newer defer say 2003 on.

and anyway you cant tell me that a parttroll would look this good on a beach....
