You can carry a spare ecu you just have to have it coded.

I bought a spare and had that chipped. I use this one and carry the factory one around with me. I also have a nanocom, but IMHO this is complete overkill. I know lots of people with you rarely hear of someone with a fuel injected cars carrying spare ecu's but there you go.

You are welcome to have a drive in mine if you ever want if it's of any help. I can also demonstrate the nanocom if you want. :)

Damn they look expensive given the k's. :o But then logic seems to leave the room when talking defender residuals. Ours is a 2005 and it's only just ticked over 40k. There aren't many defenders that average 13k per year like ours :o

FWIW I get to see more broken isuzus than I get to see broken Td5's and I go looking for broken td5's...

there are more td5 powered landies in australia than isuzu...

I guess the end result is that everyone likes his or her vehicles for their own reasons, (and I meant what I said about the 130CC...Today I drove a chipped low km straight and cared for one and I'm very tempted actually...:eek:) and as I mentioned in an earlier post, I too know people that have never had a reliablilty issue AT ALL.


The disadvantage of the Tdi is that once you have driven a Td5, chipped or not, it is hard to go back:twisted:

It's not hard to go back. After owning a Td5 Disco that gave no end of trouble I've decided that Tdi's are for me and I'm sticking with them. Having said that though I also had a 2002 Td5 Defender that gave me 100000km absolutely trouble free.

I have no problem with the TD5 as a motor and mine has been trouble free for 70000kms. BUT, I'm glad I bought mine new and know how it has been treated and serviced as I think a lot of the bad rep the motor has is based on it being more fragile then some with regard to poor maintenace. Be prepared to pamper it with regard to servicing and I think reliability is a given, besides some known faults that are best addressed before rather than later.As for serviciability etc... I took a look under the bonnet of a new Patrol recently, the one with the top mounted intercooler, I know which motor I would rather have to work on.
