Tappet pads on top of valve stems?
Loose crank bolt/ balancer?
Broken flex plate?
Loose rocker shaft bolts?
Broken valve spring?
Sorry, but I can't think of anything else at the moment...

... my thought is... no...
A quick search here doesn't seem to have helped... 300Tdi, auto. Like I said, sounds like a mixture of Beetle ticking and an old Subaru ticking. Not blowing any more smoke than usual. No oil scattered anywhere... Was just serviced, tappets done, so that wouldn't be it, would it? I think its down on power, but I can't be sure as I limped the 10k's home after I heard it.
I'd really hate to have to take the day off tomorrow*, any ideas?
*not really but oh well

Last week was TD5 week, this week looks like Tdi.What is next week,3.9's. Pat
striped thread in head for rocker bolts?
mine had this drama after i got a free service from a reputable mechanic
i ended up fixing it up myself
first and last time i let any one work on my cars
Thanks. Unfortunately, I don't have the knowledge to fix stuff myself... I'm clutching at straws at the moment but I will probably end up making that phone call... haha
I don't suppose its a good idea to take it for a spin and see if it gets any worse...
Probably not!
If it wasnt doing it prior to the garage doing the tappets and it now is, and its a tappety noise I would start there.
I dont know much about tdi's but could they have left the locknuts loose on one or more? (if thats how they are adjusted?)
good luck
Pete
Found this on another forum if you fancy checking them yourself..?
1. Rotate crankshaft until No.8 valve (counting from
front of engine) is fully open.
2. Using a 0,20 mm (0.008 in) feeler gauge adjust
clearance of No.1 valve.
3. Slacken locknut and turn adjusting screw
clockwise to reduce clearance and
anti-clockwise to increase clearance. Tighten
locknut to 16 Nm (12 lbf/ft).
4. Repeat operation for remaining tappets in the
following sequence:
No.3 tappet with No.6 valve fully open.
No.5 tappet with No.4 valve fully open.
No.2 tappet with No.7 valve fully open.
No.8 tappet with No.1 valve fully open.
No.6 tappet with No.3 valve fully open.
No.4 tappet with No.5 valve fully open.
No.7 tappet with No.2 valve fully open.
5. On completion, recheck clearances and adjust
as necessary.

thanks, i'll give that a go... now where did i put those feeler guages...
i can run it with the rocker cover off, right?
forgive me for my basic questions...
EDIT: Uhm, well it seems to be fixed... But I'm skeptical. The rearmost nut holding the rocker shaft (?) down was not even finger tight... but I can't see that making that much noise... Still, the noise appears to be gone. Maybe there was a leak that was plugged up during the service which was one of those built in to the Tdi from the factory and that somehow made something noisy...
