Whooo, it sounds like a challenge. I hope you can make it happen for others to follow though.
Howd'y, I am toying with repowering my trusty old 88 RR 3.5
The logical choice without straying off the rover wagon would
be a tdv8. I realising that it would be a engine/gearbox/diff transplant.
Has anyone had any experience or knowledge in the tdv8? I am thinking
that the computer will be the tricky tricky part?
Cheers

Anyone care to guestimate what a rover TD8 would cost?![]()
Does the TDV8 have a diff integrated into the sump? If so then an independent front end (or lots of lift) might be necessary.
I know plenty of people tried to get a TD5 into RRC or P38, I believe that the earlier defender engines (or at least ECU) were the go – did any get it going?
Wouldn’t there be even greater electronic issues with PSA’s TDV6/V8 not to mention cost. 3.0 TD6 would be cheaper, and X5 wouldn't have as many body controls of L322, so theoretically an X5 ECU might be easier again.
Would be awesome to see this project working…. Would be worthy of a mag cover for sure!

From the pictures i have seen the front diff does not seem to be intergrated in the sump. Which might mean you would 'only' have to swap the engine and transmission?
Tell you what it would be one quick machine if you got it going. Diesel and it still sounds like a V8. Do it.
84' 120" ute - 3.9 isuzu.
A chev V8 Diesel would be cheaper, easier and sound mean. But a bit heavy
If you get around to the TDV8 it will be interestingAny thing can be done with enough funds
Cheers Tony
Where are u going to get a TDV8 from and at this stage I figure they would still be worth $20-30K. Try finding a TDV6 - rare as hens teeth - still big big big $$$.
Just not cost effective - over capitalised to the extreme.

Even A TD5 can be costly and a bit of a night mare due to the electrics that go with the engine and how they talk to all the car not just the bits that do with the engine , Never mind a TDV6 or TDV8
I would just put a 300 Tdi in after all they were in RRC from the factory and can get parts for them off the shelf easy (i know they were done here but were very popular in the Uk , and can get parts shipped from there) I had a RRC that i put a 200 TDi into . Just got an engine and gearbox from a Disco and put it into the rangie . Easy to do , and plenty of 300 Tdi around that you can get hold of for not too much
