Mines the same rangieman sometimes I can let the clutch out slowly in Neutral and sound will go away, takes a couple of goes but in a 1994 300tdi defender with 335k you've gotta expect a little wear and tear...:D

well the noise that i am hearing is a whine noise when under load and knocking when using the gears to slow down .
and all the springs are loose and have deep wear marks in them . and a couple of the bits that hold the springs in place on the inside have come loose and 2 have been destroyed
Loose clutch centres are a part of 300Tdi life, and if the clutch springs etc are loose AT ALL then toss it away.
The centre boss is 'floating' in these anyway by design, but excessive slackness etc will mean imminent failure.
The clutch is a weak point in these to the point that most seem to fail mechanically before the friction material wears appreciably.
That noise you are experiencing in the gearbox however, sounds horribly like a layshaft bearing/s and needs to be investigated ASAP. My bet is the front layshaft bearing.:(

Well its the clutch in mine , If it was the layshaft it would be there consistantly with the clutch released.
Mine does,nt it is sometimes and sometimes not , And i feel if it was the layshaft it would of failed by now as mine has been doing it for 2 years ,it,s a daily driver and a weekend warrior;)
Its done 40000 k,s like that
a little spring is what stopped me at cooma
Allan and Mick, first Mick, if you put your input shaft in the vice with the splines up and slipped the clutch plate on and twisted the plate from the outer edges you should get some movement against the springs in the clutch plate. However if you can move the centre splines with your fingers, BIN IT,
If I had the gear box out I would replace the spigot bearing in the flywheel, the Pressure plate and Clutch plate, the Throwout/thrust bearing any clips or other moving wearing bits, cheap insurance.
Allan, in your case it could be the Throwout/Thrust bearing or the loose centre in the clutch plate, Regards Frank.
my advice is replace the lot use a 300 pressure plate and a 200 disc ,put in a new reinforced fork, and if you want to you chould put in a 130 disc nearly bulletproof that
