    Hi Mick;

    when I drove Elmo the first thing I noticed was your Clutch , i even pointed it out to you if you remember... as for centre Spline inside the Clutch plate , I don't know if it should be loose, I suspect it doesn't???

    You don't say which vehicle it is - but in general the answer is no, it should not be loose. See where the slack is. If it is on the rivets attaching the splined bit to the flat plate that pushes against the cushion springs, replace it without hesitation. Also, I have had the centre break out of this plate on a 2a - it may be cracked, and this again means replace without question.

    If it is just wear on the bits pushing against the springs, it is not necessarily a replacement job, but in my view any doubt at all about a clutch plate once you have it apart is a replacement job. For me to put a clutch plate back it would have to be just about perfect.

    Will the clutch plate make any noises while driving with the loose spline ?

    It will probably rattle when idling, but should be quiet when under load.

    Mine has made a noise at idle for 2 years now , you cant hear it when your cruising or when the clutch is depressed
    Ive never had my gearbox out , i know my clutch plate will be the same as you discribe but the clutch works so till the day i want to change it or it fails , it lives

    So is a slightly loose fit on the spline the most likely cause of a very faint rattle when idling in neutral which disappears completely if the clutch pedal is disengaged briefly?

    That's probably the springs on the plate that are there to soften the knock of the diesel engine. My old Disco did exactly that and that was what I was told, ermm, "fed".
