Funny enough one of our Kumagusta loaders done the same thing on the weekend and it was sucking air through the drain on the water seperator. It has a clear bowl and you could see the bubbles. Pat
Ok fozzys giving me the irrits... the diesel runs for between 5 and 30 seconds then dies out and wont restart till after a full rebleed.
Ive bypassed the pump so its not drawing air from there and IVe got an electric pump pushing fuel through and I have a clean return from the return lines when it starts and runs (for the little time it does) but as expected after it stops it blows a little froth while it purges the injector pump...
Anyone got any random guesses?
Dave

As PAT303 suggests - air leak on the filter (my 2.25 diesel had two filters - does yours?) or a fitting, probably with a restriction in the line from the tank or less likely between there and the injection pump, that means the line from the electric pump to the injection pump is positive pressure until the engine starts sucking fuel, but can't keep up because of the restriction.
All I can think of!

Electric pump stuffed?

A little little leak some where is my bet. My isuzu had one which was a slightly loose fitting. Does it have a priming pump? A leak there perhaps.

most of those have already been looked at.. but since while I was doing it I was on 3 lots of prescription drugs with the "may cause altererd state of alertness" or "may cause drowsiness, do not drive or operate heavy machinery" type warning lables I may have missed something stupid.
Knowing my luck its just that the fuel level is so low that when the engine starts it vibrates the fuel and then the pick up draws air...

Dave I have seen the pipe inside the tank on Series Rovers crack due to vibration if you fill the tank to the top it masks it. Might be worth a try

I had a similiar problem when I first bought my diesel engine. I could tell that there was no air getting into the injector pump (I inverted the pressurised fuel filter so that the water trap became an air trap). It would run for 5~30 seconds, then stop. Once I nearly got around the block before it stopped. It would then require a full bleed. I took the pump into a injector specialist, and he said that the internal seals were worn.
When I bought my engine, it had been laid up for a period of time. How long has it been since you last relyably ran your engine? When did you last rebuild the injector pump?
Air can only get in under vacuum. Have a glass sight bowl inverted to trap air between the lift pump and the injector pump. Then any leaks are under pressure, and can only seak fuel out.
Aaron.
as stated check over all your fittings for an air leak it doesnt take much air to stop a mechanical injection pump
