99 Series 2 Disco Td5 Auto, Gearbox troubles

    The Scenario '
Car has been serviced to the book as a far as i am aware by our trusted mechanic for the last 4 years , Dealers before that (however nearly every time it was serviced at a particular dealer unamed a few weeks later something else would break )

however these four years have been relatively trouble free, at the moment we have a major problem, the gearbox

car is driving up a small incline, there is a large CLUNK and we are rolling backwards. no more forward drive , only reverse Fortunately we were close to home and dads land cruiser came to the rescue and towed us home through the backstreets

I have looked under and cant see any obvious problems , as we all know i couldn't put my finger on any specific oil leaks etc from the box as every thing down there is coated in oil of leaky landrovers ahaha
i checked the linkages were working and they are fine.

basically i am assuming the box is stuffed and need to look at the costs involved in fixing it , i am not afraid to do the work my self either however it might be a bit tricky for one person
i would prefer to have it done but it all depends on costs

    things i have thought of

somthing simple or or internally fixable in car ? $
    Rebuild ?$
Second hand replacement ?$ might get another dud though ? come in other cars beside disco ?
Manual Conversion , something i like the sound of, however i am not sure aside of installing a clutch pedal and brake manual flywheel and starter what other changes would need to be made to computers wiring etc, ?$

Thanks for any help, or opinions
    Blake

    Hi Blake,
Assuming it hasn't run low on oil, they are difficult to check, you need a 8mm hex key and remove the bung at the front RH edge of the trans sump with the engine idling in neutral. The level is OK when it runs out or is at the edge of the thread, cold.

If the oil level is OK and you only have reverse, I would suspect a sprag clutch failure, and this is not uncommon as they are fairly light duty in these.

If you plan on keeping the vehicle, get the box recoed properly, about $3800 to $4000 at least. (This includes labour, oils etc etc)

If not, then try TRS in Adelaide etc for a used one.

If all else fails go for an Ashcroft rebuilt one
    Ashcroft Transmissions

    Supposedly stronger all round.

ZF themselves have an exchange programme for these gearboxes, or you can have your original rebuilt, for around that sort of $3000 (it could be less but it depends who you go through) but you need to factor in labour too. Seeing as you are handy with the tools, you could even tackle it yourself.

ZF HQ is in Sydney too.

my moneys on it being a fractured clutch pack, if its only "sort of" driving in reverse its the primary. if it drives properly in reverse then its the second set.

excusing my normal distaste for autos Ive always been sus about rebuilding a box thats fractured a clutch pack (same same for a manual thats taken out any of the middle gears of the layshaft) and Id go the ZF exchange programe route.

My bet is the clutch pack. If the box is in good nich the clutch pack is not to hard to remove and have replaced.
First thing is check fluid levels. If they are ok drop the sump and check the filter. Lots of graphite type stuff in the oil means you have done the friction material and it needs at least one clutch pack done. If you have got the crap into the valve body then it will need cleaning out.
If it has had water in the oil then the clutch packs and torque converter may have delaminated. With a stock box exchange for a rebuilt one is the quickest option. Paying for a rebuild will cost round the $3,000-$4500 mark unless you are lucky.
