Philip A's eternal quest for economy

Well here we are in Cloncurry with a strong SE wind and next G that just came on line again. Tomorrow we go to Lawn Hill, then Boorooloola and Roper Bar, so no next G for a while. So next Tinme I get on line will be a while.

Petrol consumption on the RRC 3.9 towing the camper was 17L per 100 at first then the last fill with flat going from Emerald to Longreach was (wait for it) Ta da,
15.6 L per 100Km at about 100Kmh. It looks about the same from Longreach to Cloncurry.
I am stoked. I will put up with a bit of stalling on hot start for that.
So at the moment the dyno tune sure looks worthwhile.
    Regards Philip A

You will love lawn hill Phillip, stay at adels grove and don't forget to go for a swim there in the pools. Turtles and all in crystal clear cool water. One of our favourite places.

I was about to say go diesel, but we were only getting 14l/100km with the Rangie towing our camper into a headwind, and the best we ever got was 11.5 to 12.
That is excellent fuel consumption for a V8.

Enjoy your trip, wish we were out there still

    Great economy from a V8!!
We have just returned from an 11000km trek from Vic to Cairns, Chillagoe, across developmental road to Karumba, Normanton, Gregory Downs, Lawn Hill (well worth the effort to get to!), Dommadgee, Hells gate, Cattle Station called 7 emu on the Robinson River near the Qld/NT border(brilliant) then Borooloola, Daly Waters (and bitumen--this was a sad moment!), Katherine Gorge, Uluru then south through Adelaide, Kingston, Robe, Mt Gambier and home.

Towed an approx 800kg camper beihind the auto tdi and returned an average of 12.4l per 100km at around 95 to 100-best about 11, worst about 14.5. So those V8 figures are brilliant!

At PhillipA's economy rates his car will be as cheap to run as the tdi...average price of diesel for the trip was $1.98.

Good to hear of your trip.
I am at Booraloola at the moment came up from Lawn Hill via Hell's gate.
Made a mistake on the track up from Lawn Hill to Doomagee. Followed a young bloke on to the track to Kingfisher Camp. Lost about an hour vs If I would have turned right at the T!!!!, due to the terrible Station track. Bloody signs pointed to Hell's gate also when by far trhe best way idsm via Doomagee east.

Must have picked up a bad load of fuel at Adels Grove. Bloody car backfired and spluttered all the way to B. Once stopped and restarted it would go Ok for a while. Maybe I will drain it in the morning
Hell's Gate is now closed as they are not allowed to sell more 1carton of beer per car and went broke. The Booraloola pub is also broke.
    Ah the Nanny state.
By the way, Lawn hill is worth the effort, and we were lucky enough to get about the best camp spot near the canoes.
    Regards Philip A

we also thought Lawn Hill a top spot..all that deep clear water in the middle of that lanscape is spectacular..Kingfisher Camp was also a nice green spot to prop for a few days before resuming the trip into the dry and the dust. the drive from LH to KFC goes through some great country, landscapes not seen anywhere else on the trip. One day I will get the pics organised.

Well here we are at Mataranka having the hot spring cure.
We drove from Borraloola up to Lorella Springs Station on the Roper Bar road. From there to Roper Bar and Mataranka in one hit.

Unfortunately the problem with the car persisted. After about 2 hours of slow going towing on bad roads with a strong tail wind the car started to miss and splutter /backfire under any throttle. It then would get worse until it just died. Funniley enough turning the ignition off then restarting cured the problem for a few minutes then again. It was a slow tense trip. It took me 5 minutes to pass a grader on the final bitumen bit.

Anyway today I changed the fuel filter and replaced the fuel pump relay, both of which were new. I also drained all the remaining fuel, although there didn't seem to be any water in it. At least I have discounted 3 things.
If it still plays up, it looks like replacing the new fuel pump, and then fuel pressure reg and maybe fuel temp sensor.
The mechanic in Mataranka (Willy) loves Toyos but is a top bloke who let me use his hoist for free. Not much of that around these days.
I called NRMA as I have premium cover, and got AANT who were useless. The contractor wanted to tow me to Katherine rather than drain the fuel.

Anyway today its going fine, and I may not face the same conditions for a very long time. We will see. So far it only cost me 25 litres of fuel and an hour, and I got to grease the unis.
    Regards Philip A
