Tacho Jumping around think alternator problem

    Hi guys,
I have a problem where my taco is jumping around (fast moving about 2000 rpm) or going to zero for a few secounds.
I am current on a 6000+km trip around Queensland and today on a town Boulia (south of Mt Isa), so I try and check for reposonses when ever I can.

My vehicle Setup. D1 300TDI, Dual (new) batteries and Taxride dual battery controler. The alternator was rebuild about 8 months ago (2000km).
I am reading about 13.4 to 13.8 volts while driving at 70-110km/hr and 14 volt when stopped. The tacho was working fine this morning for about 1 km and untill the speed got over 70km. voltage at this time was 14.1v.
The Battery light has never come on. and batteries seem to be chargeing ok (At least I think they are).

I will try and get the alternator tested in Mt Isa this thurday if possible.

If you have any ideas of what the problem could be please post a reply and I read it in a day or two.

    thank you
    Navron

good luck with the rest of the trip

Quite possibly just the tacho sensing wire on the back of the alternator. Remake the connection with a new crimp eye terminal and it should fix it.

Yep, it use to drive me mad till I found the terminal on the back of the alternator was a loose fit.

Use some pliers to squeeze each side of the terminal on the end of the wire and then force it back on the post on the back of the alternator and ( hopefully ) all should be well.

It worked for me...although after the second attempt I crimped on a new connector onto a fresh bit of copper on the existing wire.

Mine was doing a similar thing. It turned out to be two problems. I resoldered all of the joins on the back of the tacho. This fixed the inaccurate reading, but it still bounced either side of where it should have been. I had already replaced the terminal of the tacho wire on the alternator which eliminated the bounce for a while. I noticed the wired had hardened due to it's proximity to the exhaust, so I replaced the last 8" of wire with a new piece. Put it all back together and it has been perfect ever since.

Seeing as you are travelling, I'd start with the wire on the back of the alternator first and see how it goes.
