Mysterious hole in 300tdi turbo manifold

I noticed (heard) a hole in the turbo manifold the other day and looked and saw a small perfectly round hole in the casting. The edges of the hole are not corroded and it looks like a bolt hole but there is no thread.

Does anyone know what goes here?

Is it a fault in the casting?

Reckon it's burned a hole in it..... Which would indicate probable tuning dramas.

Just had a look at mine.

No holes anywhere on the manifold like that.

    Major bugger that...

I dont believe you can obtain the 2/3 manifold and dump casting seperate to a 300tdi turbo?
How good is your cast welding... I know mine is really bad!!!

Gotta be getting mighty hot to burn there, pretty thick casting at the dump pipe?

How long have you had the car? That would have to upset the performance somehow? If you haven't had the car long and the hole was always there maybe someone drilled it for some kind of aftermarket sensor?

    hole in manifold

No problems with the performance (other than it being a 300tdi) as it is after the turbo. I am getting full boost.

The edges of the hole are full thickness and the hole is perfectly round.

A strange idea I had was that once upon a time, there was a hole put there for something and then filled in later. Over time this fill has heated up and cooled down many times and then finally let go.

Other than a puff of smoke from under the bonnet at start up and a bit of hissing noise, the car is running fine.

I assume that's an EGT probe in the flat plate beside the hole. What EGT readings do you have?

Max about 650 dragging up a hill.

I don't reckon it is heat related as it is perfectly round and full thickness edges.

I might just thread a short bolt in there.

I would tap it BSP and put a socket head pipe plug in it - if the existing hole size is suitable. Other wise a short set screw
