    Charging Problem

I have a combined starting and charging issue that I’m having no luck with. I have a 110 County with an Isuzu 4BD1T. At anything below 1,250 rpm the charge light flickers on. It is not a steady glow – it just flickers. Over 1,250 rpm the light goes off.

I have put a multimeter on it and it seems to be putting out a good charge at idle, but the battery is never strong enough to start the engine on a cold morning. Having said that, I have charged the battery using a mains powered charger and it is still sluggish. There is no problem when the engine is warm. The battery is getting long in the tooth and may be past it.

So, two questions. First, how do I work out what is causing the charge light to come on? I’ve checked the various connections and cleaned the earths and so on. Even so, if anyone has any detailed ideas I’d appreciate it. Secondly, what is the best kind of battery to replace my old one with? I don’t run many accessories (no winches or fridges) but it is a lot of motor to turn over when it’s cold.

    Cheers,
    Dave.

What voltage readings are you getting from the multimeter
    1. at idle
    2. at approx 1500 rpm

It should be about 14V at 1500, but it will probably be a bit lower at idle. Check that, at 1500 rpm, it is still producing at least 13.8V with the headlights on as well.

Provided all the above is OK, I would say the battery is due for replacement.

    Cheers,

    Lionel

If the battery is toast put in a new one.... then relegate the inox filled one to the second battery for winching and running fridges and the like...

worst case scenario you can draw 700+ amps trying to crank the suzi over.

your alternator might have a dying positive side diode in it and the interfereance from it will be causing the light to flicker, grab a handheld AM radio and touch the antenna to the vehicles earth and tune it off station, with the engine running if you hear a tzzt in time with the light flicker your alternator needs attention...

the light is also driven by a relay that can give troubles if the earth to the relay board/plug is a bit off or the contacts on the relay are dying.
