    rubber coupling

gday I am just replacing the donut coupling on the rear drive shaft on the tdi....can anyone tell me if the washers go on the inside or the outside of the flanges. reason I ask is that it is now installed with washers on the outside (ie not next to the donut) and it appears distorted?
    thanks

Washers go outside, beneath the bolt heads and nuts.
Slight distortion at rest is normal in these, thats why they flog out with a suspension lift so easily. D2's have almost no distortion at rest, their diff nose angle is different to the D1.
    Should go bolt-washer-flange-donut/coupling-flange-washer-nut.

Yes as Justin just said but also make sure it is driving through the thicker part of the coupling and not the thinner flex bit or it will chop out pretty quickly.

thanks Justin..I can leave as is then...I have a 2 inch lift so guess that explains its shape and the fact it is the second one in 70000km... both times it has needed changing has been after extended trips with 4wding and lots of corrugated roads..they obviously get a hammering under stress. I wonder if there are any heavier duty ones about? Spose I'll do the change over to a proper uni one day.

Yeah just go the Uni's, there is no other choice as far as the rubber coupler goes and unless you changed the diff angle there is no way it would get any better.

It might change with brands but the last 2 that I have had had a thinner bit and a thicker bit, 1 is for drive and 1 is for flex

Why do they have the rubber ring instead of uni's?
