    Maxi Drive CV rings

Well finally got round to fitting some Maxi Drive CV chrome moly strenghthening rings on our 85 RRC CV.s. Not that 85 CV's are weak, but if you have them why not fit them. As per the photos they press on over the CV to prevent them from exploding when under high stress.

I got these from Mal before he closed. I have 2 extra if anyone wants to copy them I can send a sample to you. Just be aware that not all CV's are identical. I bought a new genuine set for spares and the outer of the CV was 0.004" larger than the originals. pretty sure they are 4140 C/moly.The ones pictured have the groove machined in it for ABS.

Very nice! That groove on mine are for the boot clip though. These CV rings are from the Bowler batch and were designed to run the boot on them. They run a boot because like the D2 and I think P38, they have an exposed CV. If they fit the RRC and into the housing... then bonus, but the sensors in these hubs do not work off the CV. Interesting you talk about the .004" oversize as variations in fit is what caused their demise from production - everything including parts were all there and ready to go, but the CV's were not all manufactured to a good enough tolerance in the OD, so some rings worked, some had to be machined and others were not satisfactory to use as they would not have been a press fit. Mal was saying that he could have loctited them into place, but thats not how he did things. The ABS rings look similar, but they have a machine pattern on them that almost looks like a square toothed gear.

My Maxidrive D2 CV's w/ ring. Mal reckons this setup should snap the axle before the CV.

    Cheers

    Oversize

i had to put the second set of CV's in the lathe and take off the .004''. At least with the D2 set up you dont have swivel housing clearance problems. I had to machine a very small semi circular slot in the swivel so the ring would clear. Its actually and extension of the original slot that LR put in it .

Will measure one up tomorrow for you Phill.
