    brakes

    pay atention to them....

I very nearly got caught out. big red developed a bit of a squeeling noise a week or so ago from the rear end when the brakes were on. I know what you're thinking, probabley the same as I was, yep new pads needed... its an especially easy call to make when at your last service your pads were only 2mm off of the wear guides.

heres whats left of my pads, these are the worst of the rears and the fronts.

the fronts were just clear of the wear markers and the rears well the metal on metal noise I was getting wasnt the wear guides, they had snapped off on the left hand side and the rotor is damaged and it now probabley wont machine back inside spec. the right might just make it but it wont have a lot of meat on it.. BUT it will be usable as a spare if needed.

I expected to get to the next service on these pads but all it takes is a caliper piston dragging a little and you wipe out your pad in double quick time.. What I didnt expect was for the wear tang to snap off so I didnt get any warning untill I was metal on metal on the rear end...

So what makes a caliper piston drag and how can it be cured?

Yep Agree!!, I learn with a Bits a missan triton ute!, came to a intersection on a down hill run , foot on brake nothing happened, straight across missed everything thank god, Stopped there and then on side of road ,jacked it up and took front wheel off , looked in caliper nothing at all there just piston hanging out , had worn pad of metal backing plate ,then some till the thing desinergrated big time, yes very wary now.

    cheers Sumo

lack of maintenance, a build up of crud from offroading.. although its more common on single sided fully floating calipers when the guide pins for the calipers get stuck.

otherthings that can cause it are leaking seals that put oil onto the rotor turning your brakes into abrasive pads.

the best preventative cure is to pull your pads out when you rotate your tyres and clean out whats in there with brake cleaner.

since I rotate my tyres every service I get a good idea as to whats going on with my brake wear. those pads are near as damnit 90 K Km old... thats what happens when you engine brake a lot, your pads and brakes last for ages...

and TimNZ I dont even want to know how your rear brakes got that bad...

They wern't mine! One of the mechanics in NZ brought them along to one of the club meetings, apparently the owner of the disco they belonged to complained of a squeeling noise and a sharp pull to the left....

If it was mine and they were 2mm of wear plates, I probablly would have replaced them straight away and not taken the chance as I did with the last set.

First there is dangerous and inattentive tyre fitters, now there is downright inattentive vehicle owners who MUST'VE heard more than a slight noise to get to that state.

It is no wonder there are so many fatalities on our roads.

I have a D1 front disc rotor and pads like that one to show people what happens when you ignore noises and don't get your vehicle serviced/ checked on a regular basis.

It isn't in peices like that one but is damn close. Makes them sit up and listen when they see it.

That's why the mechanic brought them into the meeting, as a reminder to us all. After checking my county, (not soon after!), I found the front discs to be about 2mm under size, they didn't have any deep scoring, so they must have worn very evenly, or been over skimmed.
