An old trick many years back was to pour clean rain water in the alternator while its running to wach all the grit out and hopefully it will start to work..
the mud sticks the brushes and then they dont charge....
Went for a run yesterday and foolishly drove through some deep muddy water. Now my charge light is on. Didn't come on yesterday, only this morning.
Alternator is putting out 12.14V with the motor running, seems a little low, the battery reads 12.4V with the motor stopped.
Any suggestions?![]()

invariably if its a disco whats happened is some crap has gotten into the bushes for the slip rings and some more has come under lifting the bushes....
the crap in the bushes is holding them off of the slip ring so you are getting nothing out of the alternator...
with just parklights your battery, if standard, will drive a D1 for 70 minutesish before it gets too low to drive the fuel pump.
its a DIy to sort it out but I reccomend going to new brushes as the old ones will now be worn and will damage the slip rings if you try to reuse them...
dont ask how I know.

Your alternator is not putting out anything. That is just battery voltage at teh alternator terminal. They are connected by a BIG wire.
