to goo or not to goo on TD5 sump?

RAVE is explicit in directing that a new sump gasket on a TD5 be fitted dry...

Mine was leaking after 9 years and 140000km.. so I am replacing the gasket with a new one and checking the oil pump drive bolt while I am at it...

so do I accept the advice from RAVE or do I use gasket goo..? if I do goo which goo?

be interesting to hear what the status of your oil pump bolt is... My 99 D2 has done 140K k including a lot of rough dirt that you would think would vibrate a bolt loose if it was loose to start with. I was thinking about having a look at the bolt regardless although Graeme Cooper reckons the problem is much overstated and they've rarely seen it...
Always looking for creative new ways to get bogged... :whistling:

76 RR...sold coz fuel was expensive at 70c/l
    93 200 Tdi Disco...old faithful...sold to make way for...
    99 Td5 Disco ACE...nice drive...hopefully reliable...

    Just dry fit the gasket.
I checked my bolt a couple of years ago as I had to have the sump of anyway. For a 5 min job might as well just check.

What about checking the pump bolt and re-using the existing gasket?

I've a day off work on Friday and could do it then. If re-using the gasket was a bad idea I could put it off to another time.

    Cheers

You should be able to re use it. If it leaks then your just going to have to replace it sometime.

I just had a look at RAVE. On re-assembly, it says to....

"Apply sealant Part No - STC 3254 to joint faces of timing chain cover and crank shaft rear oil seal housing".

Is this required? If so, what is this sealant commonly known as?

    Cheers
