    Exhaust pipe...

Not really too much of a technical question this one but...

After squashing the centre muffler on my Disco I took my car to the mechanics for repair and was given a choice:

    1) Replace the centre muffler - $250ish.
    2) Go for a new "straight through" exhaust. Nicer sound, bit more power etc.. - $900ish.

Given that at the time money was short I naturally opted for the cheaper option.

What only occured to me the other night (after having a look under my car and seeing how the new muffler had been inserted) was why couldn't the damaged muffler (and the rear mufler) be removed and simply replaced by a straight piece of pipe to create a straight through exhaust?

Is there more to it than that? I'm sure there must be

Those prices seem a bit $$$$$$. you might want to try a few more exhaust shops.

The exhaust shop wouldn't be replacing the muffler with a section of pipe, they'd use a 'straight through' muffler which should have been better worded as 'free flow'. They can replace the somewhat restrictive original muffler with a better flowing design.

$900 sounds like it would be the whole exhaust system though maybe even including extractors.

hes got a v8, you need at minum the rear resornator to remain fitted.
i installed a 2.5'' system from the headders back without mufflers.... way to frikkin loud. i installed a round glass packed resornator at the rear, this worked a treat. and yes, you can just have a straight bit of pipe installed in place of the bent one, or have them fit a ''sports'' typr muffler.

900! tell him hes dreamin...should be closer to 500 headders back.

    cheers phil

    exhaust

    Mate

Just replaced my exhaust with a straight pipe for the princley sum of $22.00 including 2 new clamps. No real noticable difference in volume. Left rear resonator on. Took 30 mins to do the whole job. For the price ypou can check it out and if two loud by a hot dog.
