Steering box on RR should it have play

    Hi all

Just a little? should the steering box have a little play and if so how much like a ¼ of turn in the steering wheel or less or should it be firm if so how do you or can you turn a screw like on the early Holden’s to remove the play

    Cheers

1/4 of a wheel turn is way too much, with an allen key and a spanner you can adjust the play. If the play is still there after you have adjusted it check the pitman arm nut is tight and also the condition of the balljoints .

Thumbs up thanks for the help

Thanks I am glad it is adjustable.

With the Allen key and spanner do you turn it in or out am guessing in as I have not looked at it yet?

don't start at the steering box

Look at tierod ends , panhard rod bushes , swivel hubs and wheel bearings.

Get some one to rotate the steering wheel (engine off of course!) while you get under and feel for slop in these components

I recently solved the excessive play in my P38 by trial and error as follows:

jack both front wheels off the ground and then check the extent of the free play in the steering wheel, making sure it is not due to ball joints etc.

Clean around the top of the steering box and dab three "dots" of white type corrector fluid in a line...one on the edge of the centre adjustment screw, one on the corresponding side of the locknut and one on the housing.

Then loosen the locknut and tighten the adjustment screw (screw inwards/clockwise from above) 1/8 of a turn only ...based on the relative positions of the white marks... then carefully nip up the locknut.

Check the steering play ...then full lock to full lock...being careful to feel for any undue "binding".

Keep adjusting until there's no play and no binding.

Then loosen the locknut and back off the adjustment screw about 15 degrees and tighten the locknut...then take the vehicle for a drive.

If it feels too tight back off the adjustment another 15 degrees.

    Hope this helps!!

    cheers
