    Tool Specs

Just wondering if anyone had the drawings and specs for the timing gear removal tools, locking pins & pullers for a 300tdi.

The crankshaft locking tool can be made from a 1/4" bsp plug, by drilling a hole on the centreline of the plug (best done in a lathe) with a twist drill that suits the slot in the ring gear on the flywheel.

From memory the drill size is 3/16", but check 1st by rotating the engine so cyl 1 is at top dead centre and checking what drill shack fits neatly in the slot (the slot is in the bottom of the gap between 2 gear teeth).

The 1/4" plug screws into the wading plug hole in the flywheel housing. Then push the shank of the twist drill through the hole in the plug so it engages the slot.

A twist drill shank can be used to lock the injection pump. Again from memory it is 9.5mm or 3/8".

Be careful that the drill shank is long enough so the drill is not inserted so far that the fluke section is not in the drive flange as they will allow too much play.

My tool was made by machining the shank of a bolt to suit and cutting off one side of the head to clear the boss.

Pretty sure that I've pulled the harmonic balancer and crankshaft pulley without special tools, but it was a while ago, so I can't remember what I did at the time.

    I have the factory tools....
puller and pins and shafts, plus a home made crank holder to get the damn crank bolt off....

If someone close by is an engineer and had cad, they can come borrow it and then draw it up and someone can get it made...

    Hi Ryan (or Mr Inhilltop?),

I made my flywheel locking pin as follows:

As Bushie said, used a 1/4" BSP hex-headed brass plug from a plumbing or tube supplier. I drilled this along its axis with a bench drill and tapped it 6mm or 1/4" (can't remember now) to match a long threaded stud I had handy. Then 'turned' the end of the stud to (I think) 5mm diameter to suit the flywheel slot. Not having a lathe for the plug drilling or stud 'turning', this was done by spinning the stud in the bench drill chuck while pressing the edge of a rectangular file against the tip of the stud until the dia was 5mm. Seems to work OK - just finger tighten the stud up into the slot once you have it lined-up by eye.

The pump locking pin is either a 3/8" or 23/64" drill bit shank (whichever fits snuggly - 3/8" I think.) Good idea to wrap the drill flutes with PVC tape to avoid slicing your fingers to shreds if they slip while using it for this purpose. On a new dill bit they are very sharp!

Don't have the diminsions for the pulley holder with me at the moment but looks like plenty of others have them. Has anyone had success just using an impact wrench (air or electric) to loosen the crank pulley bolt without making a holder?

By the way County87, very nice looking tools you have there (is that what all the girls say to you??)
