I repaired the starter on my daughter's TD5 Defender by stripping, thoroughly cleaning and installing a new contact / plunger set - still works fine after over 12 months. My own TD5 Disco starter failed at about the 210k km mark. I did the same and it worked fine on the bench but in the vehicle it would fail to operate intermittently - once a week or so. Thus a replacement starter was installed.
Yes, my ECU also gets a bit confused sometimes when the key is turned onto start quickly - may take a second before engaging the starter. Hope this helps, good luck. Erich
