Keep us in the loop, as I have only had the car for 3 weeks now and am looking to stop issues that stop the car going.

If it is the starter then I may be up for one as well.

Such is life, I guess the car was cheap and does have a few miles on it.

I'd say it's the starter motor Max, ours was doing the same as yours, turned out to be the starter motor, reco ones are around $300 to $350.

Fairly common on new 4WDs now, Cruisers are more common apparently, well that's what the Auto Elec told us.

    It will be the starter..

    Dont pay for a new/reco

Just take it out, strip it in the wifes laundry trough...

Clean it out and spray it with Lanotec...

Re-assemble, possibly needs new contacts and that will be it.

That doesn't always work as the problem can be in the air gap in the moving parts of the solenoid - a bit of wear increases this gap ever so slightly and reduces the strength of the solenoid. As for a reco I am assured that the solenoid is not sold as a separate part so what are you getting? I repaired the starter on my daughter's TD5 Defender by stripping, thoroughly cleaning and installing a new contact / plunger set - still works fine after over 12 months. My own TD5 Disco starter failed at about the 210k km mark. I did the same and it worked fine on the bench but in the vehicle it would fail to operate intermittently - once a week or so. Thus a replacement starter was installed.

Yes, my ECU also gets a bit confused sometimes when the key is turned onto start quickly - may take a second before engaging the starter. Hope this helps, good luck. Erich

According to scouse, the solinoid is available seperately now.

Thanks for the info - do you know where to buy it. I have a spare starter to rebuild. Thanks, Erich.

I had to replace my contacts, I suspect that sometimes when tightening the cable nuts the angle of the fixed contact to the plunger changes, resulting in a smaller surface area of contact and more rapid burning out. The dificulty comes from not being able to see how the contacts are sitting with the thing all connected up.
To get the motor off you need a 3/8 inch drive with 6 inch extension and either 14 or 15mm socket on the top nut, IIRC it is 15mm. You can go crazy trying with a 1/2 inch drive socket and ring spanners etc. With the right tools it is quite easy.
The other two are 13mm and easy to get to.

When the starter solenoid is at fault you can easily hear the click as it tries to work. I imagine if the chip is busy then you wont get the click.

I would think LR, but it may be available from a aftermarket parts supplier.

Not having bought one i can't say for sure.

NAF500010, available now at your friendly Land Rover dealer.

If there's not one nearby, then a regular Land Rover dealer will have one too.
