    Strongest gear in LT85?

I've never had a LT85 apart to study weak points. Our 120" 110 will spend most of its life in low range in these hills here. The 4BD1 has torque to spare and will pull 3rd all day long but for how long? I asume 3rd runs on one end of shaft and will stress things. Would 2nd and 4th be strongest gears to work hard over time in these LT 85 Santana boxes.

I've had great a great run out of series boxes here by advoiding hard use of 1st and 3rd gear.
Any opinions on how to treat it.......Thanks Tony.

I've got the workshop manual for the LT85 if you want it, just pm me your email. (Or if someone wants to tell me how I can post it here then anyone can have a copy).

    Cheers,

I have seen a couple of LT85s where 3rd was tired.

Lubrication to 5th gear and the back of the mainshaft is the only real weak spot though.

4th gear should be the strongest on any box as it is straight through.

You have found 3rd tired. This one loves 3rd low in the hills Sounds like we have to adjust our driving style or fit lower transfer gears so will like 4th more. I intend to put it on 33s so that will stress it more I've told the boys here to advoid 5th other than HWY. Darn thing goes up hills on HWY better in 5th then 4th as goes out of torque curve on changing down. AS you know it may be the pump. Comes on under 1000rpm and stops making usefull power at 2800 but will cruise at 3200.

he mechanically strongest gears inthe box are 1st and 4th.

1 is strong as its driving gears that are right along side major support bearings and 4th is strong as its mechanically linking the input and output shafts removing all radial tooth loading

If your in low range dont panic about the box what will kill you is too high a gear letting the suzi lug and then you get torque impulses that will eat the box regardless of what gear your in.

When I rebuilt my one, (which was sitting behind a Nissan FD35 4cyl Diesel), the only gear that need changing was 5th. The needle roller that sits between the gear and the shaft, (think it was the layshaft), had marked the inside of the gear.
