Unhappy Cooling temp gauge works intermittently

    Hi all

my temp gauge has just started playing up on the RR when you first start up the gauge starts to climb then when the RR is warm the needle drops back to cold possie will do the same thing when you get in the RR when all ready at running temp but the needle goes up and down all in one action does any one have any ideas about this or had this prob. I am tending to think it is the sender.
may possibly fit after market gauge in as I don’t think I can trust the gauge all so will fit run dry warning system.

    Cheers

    Well it's either....
1: Electrical problems with the car ... Have you got other electrical issues??

    2: Temp sensor itself

3: Lack of coolant ( water then air ... water then air) ... have you changed coolant or been loosing coolant lately??

Earth out the wire at the sensor unit and see if the gauge stays "Hot"

I'm inclined to think that the Temperature gauge itself is OK ... I would work on a lousy wiring issue or the sensor unit at the thermo housing is no good

Check the simple things first. The temp gauge on my Defender was doing exactly the same and it turned out to be simply a loose connection on the back of the gauge.
