its a simple concept...
the predecessors of your fuel tank sender and gauge were lucas...
Just got the Long range Tanks installed in my D2 V8. It has LPG and a tank on floor in rear. Which meant no access to little hatch for Tank pump access. Long story but trust me it couldn't be accessed!
Mechanic struggled with it for a few days and finally got LR Tanks in amongst all the LPG Stuff and somehow managed to get the pump in and connected while Tank was in situ.
TROUBLE IS THOUGH, that now the guage is reading incorrectly. When I went to pick it up it said 1/4 tank left, but soon ran out of petrol, so i started it on LPG and put 30l in, and now it says 3/4 tank!
i have the Long Ranger 130l replacement tank and a 35l Wing tank.
Any sugestions about what's happenned - I would rather not have mech rip the tanks out again, It's a massive job..... I have seen the tank set up on RAVE and it should just be one multi plug and the sender and pump unit should just go in. Can't understand how it could be reading that incorrectly.
All help appreciated.
Ian.

The original sender is calibrated to the original tank dimensions, not the long range tank so I would think it is a level setup issue and unfortunately you cant re calibrate the original to suit anything else.
You may need to check if the tanks have specific sender units with them but then there may be a calibration issue with the guage on the dash...
Either that or something dodgy is going on with the install.......![]()
when you set up a long range tank without changing the sender you put 10 litres in then set the sender to E or empty or the last line whichever.
When you fill it full the gauge should not start moving untill you get down to the original tank size litres e.g. under say the original 80 ltrs
anyway that was the way I set my long range tank in the hilux and this seems to be the way the long range tank in my disco was done.
pm or email me if you have any other queries.
Hi, the work your mechanic went through is the standard job for the Defender as there is no inspection cover, the lines and plug have to be removed by feel as there is just not enough length on the pipes to drop the tank right down. Whatever you do is don't break or kink any of the fuel lines - I know about this first hand.
I installed a BD 145 l replacement tank in my S2 Disco a few years ago and the gauge read correctly without any re-callibration. This is because of the dimension from the pump mounting point th the base of the tank was kept to the original dimension, thus empty is the same for both tanks. However in my case the top level of the gauge is incorrect - I can drive about 350kms till the gauge leaves the full mark. From then on it is linear.
I can only assume that either your gauge is faulty or the tank dimensions have changed or your mechanic has got the float caught when removing the pump and bent the wire, messing up the reading. Either way I don't see any way to fix it without removing the tank.
Good luck with this. Bundalene.
Thanks for all the replies Men!
I think that if the car is out of juice and stops then the tank should read empty. Simple. recalibrating it wouldn't make any difference because if the pickup can not get to the fuel then the float should not be floating.
I agree with Bundalene in that the installer guy has jammed or buggered up the float SOMEHOW, he says impossible, but after an $800 cost to install and redo the LPG I think I might have something to say.
My last option before more butchering happens is to run it out of petrol and then see if it takes a full 165 litres of petrol.
That'll be a hoot!
