300Tdi Timing gear
Hi All,
The time has come to do the timing belt!
Just a few questions for the learned forum before I embark on the journey....
I have an April 1997 built 300Tdi with a Vin of SALLJGMF3VA730xxx. The last timing belt was replaced in August 2004 at 134,700 (now 213,000) so it's sort of overdue.
Question is.... given the build date and replacement year, am I going to need an entire kit including belt and crank pulley, or will I just need a new belt?
Is it advisable to replace pulleys anyway?
Where does one get the parts at a competitive rate?
Also... does anyone have dimensions for the flywheel locking pin for an auto transmission and/or is there anywhere I can buy one (if it's cheaper than spining up on a lathe)???
And... anything else I should know before I take the plunge?
I know it's been done to death before and I have read the historical posts, but it's much better getting the latest from the people that know!
Kind regards
Maarten

Best to do a full kit, the idler pulleys are big but they are sealed units and the grease in them doesn't last forever.
Besides, if you just do a belt and a pulley fails you'll need to pull it apart again. Which will cost more than going the full kit anyway.
Call Karcraft at Silverwater (Sydney) on 02 9737 9944.

I agree do the full kit. Make sure you get the crank pulley with the solid lip not a tin lip one else you have to be very careful fitting it.
You will also need a locking pin for the injector pump.
As you are in Gero go see whyatt mech. Steve might have a kit there.
Also there are a couple of Landy aftermarket parts places in Perth just google them or use the guys that advertise on this forum. Support the guys who support this forum.

Get the kit with new crankshaft pulley and new tensioner.
The belts generally fail because the edge of the belt belt wears away from tracking over against the pulley flange (which also wears away).
Flex in the cheap pressed pulleys and the tensioner cause the belt to track off.
Also be aware that the correct torque for setting the tensioner arm has been reduced from what is given in the workshop manual. From memory it should be 11 Nm not 14 Nm. The high tension flexes the pressed pulleys more.
And before you put the front cover back on, rotate the engine and recheck the timing marks.
The nut on the front of the crank is tightened to a high torque - a long pipe on a 3/4 breaker bar helps. if not tightened properly, the keyway in the crankshaft can flog out.

300Tdi Timing belt.
Try Ian at Rovacraft on 9377 0080 as they have all the bits or kits you'll need.
And as someone else said make very sure that crankshaft bolt is done up as mine recently came loose and needed a new pulley 'cos the keyway and key got flogged out.... and then the b***** repairer hammered the hell out of the left hand nut on the viscous unit on the cooling fan to get it off.
Now why he needed it off is a mystery to me as the belts only need loosening and taking off the pulley.
He has since replaced the buggered fan unit with a new one but I won't be going back to him for anything in the future!
Finding a decent repairer in Perths northern suburbs is impossible.
Good luck.
Alan.
